What does the Pentagram Mean? |
The Pentagram is a very ancient symbol. It does not mean devil worship or human sacrifice or any of the strange and silly things that the mass media would have you believe. Simply put it is a symbol of man in harmony with nature, of the convergence of the elements earth, air, fire, and water with the fifth and invisible element spirit. A Wiccan ALWAYS draws and wears the pentagram with the point up, this shows that the spirit is over the body; that we try to live our lives in harmony and balance with ourselves and everyone else that lives on Gaea's bosom. When the pentagram is drawn inverted, it is another symbol entirely and is a common symbol of Satanists. The meaning there is body over spirit, and is a fitting symbol to that religion for their main tenet is to do what the body desires to do first and foremost. It is easy to see that to one who doesn't know otherwise the symbols may seem similar, but then a aborigine viewing the crucifix about the white mans neck would not be expected to know what the difference was between right side up and inverted. The difference is just as great with the pentagram. Several folks have asked me the difference between a pentagram and a pentacle. A pentagram is a five pointed star drawn with a single line, a pentacle is the same star drawn within a circle, but they mean the same thing. |
