DR. MATTHEW HARMON OF PORT CHARLES

Synopsis
April 1999, Page 2

Ellen later finds the box of things that Matt returned to her, which included the antique surgical instruments she gave him as a gift after his first surgery. She is angry, confused, and saddened that Matt returned them to her, and she remembers that in giving those to Matt a year ago, she had begun to allow love back into her life. In the course of working with Matt at the hospital, Ellen attempts to become close to him again. Matt makes it clear that their relationship is professional, and nothing else.

Chris Ramsey overhears some of the conversation between Matt and Ellen and realizes that they have broken up. He puts that knowledge away in the back of his mind, intending to use it against Matt or Ellen at a later date. Eve discusses the breakup with Matt, and she convinces Matt that he shouldn't throw his relationship with Ellen away so easily. Matt calls Ellen to invite her to lunch so that they can talk about their problems. Ellen, devastated by Matt's attitude towards their relationship, has allowed herself to be seduced by Sebastian's charms,
and when Matt calls her, she is in bed with Sebastian.

Ellen realizes at that moment that she is in love with Matt and that he's the one she wants to be with. She lets Sebastian know that, while being with him was wonderful, she loves Matt.
Chris overhears Ellen and Sebastian discussing their having slept together.
Ellen and Matt begin trying to mend their relationship.

As April ends and we go into May, Ellen and Matt have lunch together and he tells her that he wants to continue seeing her. Ellen tells Sebastian point blank that she wants to get back with Matt. She has followed her heart and it's led her back to Matt.

Sebastian apparently takes this disclosure well, but he later collapses in the hospital corridor. Matt performs emergency surgery, but Sebastian dies. This is a very emotional moment for Matt. He tells Ellen that he tried his best, but couldn't save him. Ellen is emotionally devastated, and she blames herself for Sebastian's collapse and death. Matt is there to comfort her.
