Basic Information about the Next Generation Internet Initiative

The Next Generation Internet (NGI) Initiative is a multi-agency Federal Research and Development program designed to provide a foundation for the Internet of the future, with the cooperation of academia and industry.

Every day, more and more people gain Internet access. In fact, Internet usage is growing by around 400% per year. Organizations such as universities and research institutions are becoming increasingly dependent on the Internet for use of new technologies to facilitate work and communication between themselves. New technologies are being created as fast as the Internet is growing, and these technologies demand high performance networks. For reasons such as these, the NGI Initiative is working to meet the technological needs of the future.
