Assignment in Eternity
(1953)

This is a compilation of four stories written between 1941 and 1949. The stories loosely relate via the common theme of defining human-ness and its evolution.
  • Gulf (1949) is a story of neo-fascist super-humans of a subtler, smarter kind, saving the world from certain evil, and saving mankind from itself...
  • Elsewhen (1941) is a story of meditating humans subjectively evolving into time-dimension travellers according to their nature: "I suspect that the conventional hereafter is real to anyone who believes in it whole-heartedly..."
  • Lost Legacy (1941) is about the Enlightened who discover the secrets of parapsychology up on Mount Shasta. Their job is to battle the nefarious anti-Enlightenists in order to spread parapsychology to mankind. (whatever...)
  • Jerry was a Man (1947) is about a singing, genetically-engineered "sub-human" who has his day in court...

Thus: Gulf is ok; Elsewhen is interesting, but stupid; Lost Legacy is simply hideous; and Jerry is superb.
