Introduction FAQ Notesor: Everything You Need to Know About the Index (and more)last updated: February 14, 2002 |
1. Introduction
Welcome to the J/C Story Index! This site attempts to provide an overview of currently available Star Trek: Voyager stories featuring Captain Janeway and her First Officer Chakotay. Some of the stories on this list are archived at the a.s.c. archives (where you can find hundreds of Star Trek [and other] stories), but most links point to different locations now (i.e. authors' homepages, etc.). Wherever they are, in most cases you can download them directly from here.
Not all of the stories on this list are about romance, some simply deal with the command relationship and friendship between Janeway and Chakotay. This should not stop you from reading them however. ;-)
A word of caution: Several of the stories listed here contain adult material, as indicated by the rating NC-17. If you are under 18, I must ask you not to download any of those. To make things easier for me, I have limited the ratings to PG-13, R and NC-17, no G, PG or whatever else. This may not always be completely accurate, but it should give you the general idea.
This whole adventure is now a joint-venture: My sister Kira has taken it upon herself to ease my workload and consequently took over the responsibility for the What's New? page. She is also helping out with everything else when Real Life gets a hold of me every now and then, and I'm grateful for all her help!2. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- Why cannot all the stories on the list be downloaded?
Some of them have not (yet) been archived anywhere, so they are not (yet) available for downloading. As soon as a link becomes available it will be added. However, some authors want to keep control over who reads their stories (especially those that contain NC-17 material), so they only distribute their material by e-mail instead of creating homepages. In thoses cases you have to write to them directly and ask for a copy of their work.
- Why don't you archive the stories instead of just listing them?
Because a) there isn't enough room and b) we don't have enough time for that. We tried, but with the index being as comprehensive as it is, it simply proved to be too much.- How do I attach a file to the add-form, to send it along with my submission?
That's easy: you don't (I'm not even sure if it's technically possible). If you just want me to read (and/or) approve your story, I'm sorry but I have to decline; (unfortunately) I don't have enough time to do that.
- Why are the ratings limited to PG-13 and NC-17?
I wanted to give a clear distinction between stories for general audience and for adults only. Since I assume that 99% of the people visiting this site are over 13 years of age, using those two ratings (and no G, PG, R, or whatever else) seemed like the easiest and least confusing way of doing this. Besides, not being American myself, I've always had a hard time seeing the difference between PG and PG-13 anyway...
NEW! We recently added the rating R, as there seemed to be a growing need for it. I think that would be somewhere between PG-13 and NC-17; someone please correct me if I'm wrong...- How good does my writing have to be in order to get accepted for posting?
If I wanted to judge all the stories listed here, I'd have to read them all first, and I simply don't have the time for that (unfortunately). Secondly, I don't think I have the right to exclude anybody's work just because I didn't like it. This is a place for everybody who likes to write J/C stories, no matter how good or bad they are. I leave it up to the readers to decide what they want to read, so as long as the writing contains a J/C element, each and every story is welcome here.- I'm looking for a story I read a while ago. I don't remember the title or author, but it went like this: [...]. Can you help me find it?
Contrary to what many people seem to think, I have not read each and every story on the index, in fact I have done very little reading lately. In some cases I may be able to help you if the summary on a story matches your description, but even then I would need to remember all the summaries on the index, and that's an impossible task. Sorry, but in most cases I will not know which story you're taking about.3. Classifications
We recently added a new feature: story classifications. When we first came up with the idea and asked people what they thought about it, some were against it on the grounds that it would take the element of surprise out of the stories. Because of that, we've come up with a code system that's impossible to guess but (hopefully) not too hard to remember. We also tried to cover as many options as possible, but in the end we had to limit the choices somewhat.
Here are the codes, which can also be displayed in a separate window for easy reference (uses JavaScript):
AT = romance ES = hurt/comfort MO = tragedy BE = light FR = action/adventure NL = violence CH = humorous GB = smut NQ = A/U (alternate universe) DE = silly GR = sad PO = PWP (Plot, What Plot?!) DK = friendship JU = angst SW = unclassifiable (whatever that means) 4. How to add a story to the index
The story submission process is currently under revision and no new stories are accepted at this time. Please check back in a few days!
5. J/C Index Story Hosting
I'm very sorry, but I had to cancel the story hosting service because there wasn't enough time to take care of everything. But I do know that there are several places out there for "homeless" authors, so I'm sure you can find a place for your story!
6. Mirror Sites
The J/C Story Index is currently mirrored at three locations:
If you would like to link to the J/C Index, please link to the main site as it is the most secure location at the moment (meaning that any of the other two might vanish or move without notice). Better yet, link to our redirect URL http://welcome.to/jetcindx/, which will always take you to a valid site.

7. The Icon
Due to popular demand, each story that has recently been added to the index will have a small icon next to the title. Please note: this does not necessarily mean that the story is brand new, it just means that it wasn't on the index before. There will be a different icon for each month, after three months it will be removed from the story. We recently changed the icons from "new"-flags to little pictures which are supposed to represent the month in which the story was added. These pictures (which we hope you'll like) are as follows:
January May September February June October March July November April August December 8. Our Guestbook
