In case you haven't noticed, I'm a rabid Tolkien fan! J.R.R. Tolkien's work and knowledge are truly astounding. I mean,
how many people can create several different languages, each with realistic (as far as realism goes, in Middle-Earth)
patterns of development and relations to other languages, whole races of people with thousands of years of history to go
with those languages, and a detailed geography besides! This is the effort of one man, not a group or
committee. His epic trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, is just the most recent part of this rich and moving history,
set in a world called 'Middle-Earth' which seems eerily similar to our own, yet very different as well.
Here are a few of the aspects of his work (and others' work he
inspired) that interest me the most.
