[Player's Note: I found this the other day and laughed my butt off. Amazing how true to the original vision I kept Lucy to, with some minor variations and add-ons. The comments in italics are sort of like 'hindsight is twenty-twenty', commenting on how close or how far-off Lucy kept to these questions. This is probably mostly OOC info because it was a character quiz...not anything that happened in game. I think most people could probably see these qualities in her anyway.]
Before we go further with your application to join Equinox and discuss finer details of your player character (PC) I would like to ask you to fill out the Quiz that I have assembled that can help determine how I will fit your PC into the Multiverse/Continuum of Equinox's Great Powers and Shadows and into our international gaming community.
I apologize for the length of the survey but many of the questions have been submitted by our players and also reflect the need to make sure that each player character gets the best chance to be fit in to our game. As well, it also allows players to be highlighted to potential issues and how they can troubleshoot their PC's to avoid these problems.
Good luck and have fun
Section 1 - Character Formation Questions
1) Which three Prince/Princess of Amber would your character want as a
parent?
Answer 1: Would my character want and not I... Hmm. Tough question. I would
say initially Brand. No, not because he was freaky powerful and/or insane, but
because Brand's quest for power was really a quest for knowledge about himself
and the universe. It was one of his driving goals, one which is very similiar
to Lucretia's (which will be my PC's name, if I am accepted). As a second
choice, she would likely like Gerard for a father. Quest for knowledge
type...no. But, Gerard is a good, solid man, with a strong sense of what's
right and wrong, something that almost inherently seems to be lacking in
Amberites. That makes him an enigma in Amber, and someone to trust and look up
to. Lucretia would find that very attractive in a father, and would base her
morals on his. The third choice would have to be Florimel. Flora has a zest
for life that's unparalleled anywhere else, and that's a rare thing. Just
wanting to be alive for the experience of it and experiencing different things
on the path is also something that is very attractive for Lucretia. I can see
a sense of 'wanting to do it all' coming from Flora, as well as proper
manners. The manners and etiquette bit might be overdone in Amber games, so
this is why I gave the first reason as the primary one.
If I had known Equinox like I know it now, I would have changed the answers slightly. Brand probably still would be number one, Jason the King of Neuvo Sangre number two, and Carl Laird of Inverness for number three.
2) What is your character's appearance?
Lucretia is of 'average' height (around 5'8) and ok build. She's not hefty,
but could easily trend that way with inattentiveness on her part (forgetting
to excercise, not eating properly, and the like). She has medium length blonde
hair, just long enough to be tied into a ponytail when she's working or doing
some task. The bangs are cut unevenly (as if she did it herself, looking into
a mirror). Her eyes are sky, or as some say ice, blue, and seem to be 'extra'
open most times, giving her a slightly startled or eager look. She's roughly
pretty, or would be if she bothered to 'make herself up'. Most of the time,
she looks pretty average; nothing to write home about, yet nothing horribly
ugly either. She dresses somewhat practically, with trousers or breeches, and
tightly laced boots. Her tunic or shirt would be tucked into her trousers, and
be tightly cuffed as well. Most of the time she wears gloves, as her hands are
scarred from years of her 'work', beyond an Amberite's ability to regenerate.
Well, not necessarily that, but she continues to do damage to them, so they
don't have a chance to. The scarring appears to be mostly burn marks, as from
acid, with some cuts and abrasions depending on what she was doing. She
carries about a big backpack as well as having several pouches and cases on
her belt, though she doesn't have them all the time. She will dress 'up' if
it's appropriate, but manage to wear gloves. However, since she finds herself
in 'dressing up' situations seldom...she seldom dresses up.
Only change here was to change her eye color from ice blue, to a blue-grey or 'hazel'. That and she hasn't been handling many toxic substances lately, or burning the hell out of her hands, so no gloves, usually. That is subject to change, of course.
3) How do you see yourself creating interaction with other PC's in the
game? (Especially as the GM can be very busy.)
Lucretia has a theory on knowledge--it leads to power. The more powerful a
person is, the more knowledge they have. So, I can see a lot of interaction
with seeking out individuals just to ask them questions, or to help identify
emanations of power, or an artifact....or just about anything that strikes her
fancy. She also loves to discuss theories, in general, and philosophy, and
would love to talk about such things with as many people as she can. In the
opposite case, where someone might need her expertise, she can be very verbose
in explaining what it is she's doing and/or found out.
4) In Amber City, how does your character dress?
She would dress appropriately to the place, but practically. Some might think
her a common craftsperson or scholar.
5) What other PC's (if any) would you like your PC to be connected with?
Any. Any connections would be welcome by her and her player alike. There
would be no one PC that I can think of to be connected with with this
character. However, I must state that Paolo seems to be about the closest
(from what I gather) to Lucretia. The reason why I state this is that Paolo
has stated at least one time that he was misunderstood in his motives. That's
Lucretia all over the place. She's almost a walking contradiction. But that
connection would be...just odd, since he seems a lot darker than her. I have
yet to read all the character's pages, but if I find one that would make sense
to be connected to, I will tell you.
This would have been heavily modified. In the misunderstood motives, her similarity to Paolo still stands...but that is it. Otherwise, those two have not one thing in common as far as I know. She's far more likely to have a connection with Carlton. They are way too much alike, paralleling each other almost. There's also a current similarity to Breyd, since Lucy's teaching Breyd her form of magic and Breyd's finding that she has a thirst for knowledge that was previously denied her.
6) Since your PC has NEVER BEEN TO AMBER or HAS NOT BEEN TO AMBER SINCE
PATTERNFALL, until they arrive IC where were they and why have they not
come to Amber lately?
Lucretia would have been deep in Shadow exploring some of her theories. She is
a necromancer, and deals with the dead. There are many, many dead in Shadow,
and of all different sorts. She'd be trying out experiments, conducting
investigations, performing autopsies and recording it all in her big Book O'
Knowledge (tm). She quite frankly would have been so absorbed in what she was
doing that she forgot all about Amber, providing she knew about it.
7) Have you read the first five books of the Amber Series
Yes, multiple times.
8) The second?
Yes, multiple times.
9) The third?
There was a third series of five books set in Amber?!?
10) any Amber stories by Roger or Amberzine authors?
No, unfortunately not.
Section 2 - Character Survey
1. What is/are your PC colour(s)?
If she had colors, they would have to be white, black, and grey, representing
Divine, Diabolical, and Medium. She dresses in whatever clothes of whatever
colors however, and tends towards 'natural' colors, of browns and greens.
This has changed slightly. I was going to go for a certain good/neutral/evil outlook, but decided eventually to just drop it. The reason why she's monochromatic in her clothing tastes is because she was in mourning for her husband for a long, long time. As she puts it, "When he died, the color was gone from life." After she got over him, it was mostly just habit. Mostly.
2. What can sends your PC into a towering fury? A killing rage?
What can send her into a rage would be the killing of innocents, or of
helpless people. Also, misusing souls and the like....like performing bad,
icky soul-transferring into a misshappen monster, or binding them unwillingly
to serve. She is a necromancer, but she's got morals! A killing rage would be
something of the same, except with people who are close to her (not that there
are many).
That hasn't changed very much at all, though she hasn't gone into a rage about things so far. Hard for her to get really and truly angry.
3. What are your PC's primary phobia's? How severe are they?
Lucretia has a phobia of big, alive animals. Especially horses. Horses hate
her. Most animals do because they can smell the stink of death on her and at
her approach. So, she gets a lot of dogs barking and cats hissing at her.
Those make her uneasy, but the big animals scare her the most. They're severe
enough that she'll generally stay out of stables or forests if she can help
it. If she can't, she'll buck it up and deal with it, unless the animal starts
to approach her in a menacing way. Then, she'll get out of there as fast as
possible.
This has been pretty much phased out. She likes animals, just is allergic to them. It's psychosomatic rather than a real physical allergy.
4. If your player character had a raid in his domicile at 3 am. What
would
he/she be doing and what would be in the room and how would they be
dressed?
Depends on the night, but she's a night owl mostly (hey, the dead pretty much
only walk at night, so it makes it hard to study 'em during the day), so
they'd find her either in a living room reading or in a lab, jotting down
notes and conducting an experiment. She'd be fully dressed, but her boots
would be off, as well as socks.
5. What would be your PC's best friend be like?
Her best friend would more than likely be a scientist, or someone who is
similarly on a quest for knowledge, and thus power. They would be sharp and
attentive to details, and most likely a boring speaker (but fascinating to
her, and other like-minded individuals). He or she would have a weird sense of
humor, rather morbid, like Lucretia's.
6. If your PC was living in the period or a shadow like ___________ what would they do and who would they be?
a) Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth I
She'd be one of the earliest type of doctors or surgeons. At the very least,
with societal rules intact, the wife of one or an assisting nurse.
b) The World of Star Wars
She would be one of those techies, that would jury-rig up repairs and the
like, or give the main characters some sort of experimental weapon to use.
c) 1950's North America
Oh! A nuclear physicist, working with radiation. She'd most likely die of a
young age here; but be brilliant and revolutionary.
d) Victorian England
Either a performing surgeon or assisting nurse again. However, since it was a
very dark and curiously morbid time, a writer would also be an acceptable
position. She'd write tales of the morbid, the penny dreadfuls that were so
popular back in that time.
e) Byzantium
Priestess of some bizarre god that would demand ritual sacrifices. She would
be the one wieldig the knife, of course. Or maybe the sacrifice.
f) Court of Catherine the Great
Tough one. Most likely, she'd not be in the court proper, but rather work with
small animals, like chickens. Or be a butcher.
g) The Early Roman Empire (I Claudius)
She would be the wife of one of the uncorrupt senators, trying to weather
Claudius' wierd demands and laws. Most likely, her and her husband both would
end up executed for being traitors.
h) 1934 - 1945
A field nurse during WWII. She wouldn't mind working to help people, no matter
how grievious the injury.
7. How does your PC deal with frustrating problems that action cannot
deal with? Do they turn to substance abuse? Depression? Procrastination
of issues?
She deals with frustration by getting frustrated. That sounds silly, I know,
but she'd blow off steam by getting pissy at her notes, and racking her brain
for a way around it. Most likely, she'd pace. I can see her as a 'pacer', and
have a lot of restless, undirected energy. The sort of person who wanders
about the house looking for something, but when someone asks 'Is everything
alright?' she'd answer 'yes', at least until the question soaked through her
head. Then, she'd turn to other people, and pester them to help her out.
Constantly...because she couldnt' rest until whatever problem was done.
8. What does your PC do for fun on a weekend?
It's an old axiom: If find a job you love, you never have to work again.
However, though, in those times where she hangs out with people (as there
aren't many who share her same passions), she'll follow their lead, and try to
make the best of it. For example, she may not be a dancer, but if her friends
take her to a night club, she'd try and dance her tail off, most likely
embarassing her friends mercilessly. For a dinner party, she'd be all manners
(at least try), and make small talk with some amusing anecdotes (well, they'd
be amusing to her). That sort of thing. Once she's off her 'work' proper, she
tries to do everything else, only barring things if they involved animals
(like riding).
9. What are your PC's flaws?
She has a one-track mind, making her slightly obsessive. She has a difficult
time understanding why people want to hurt other people (or the dead, well,
those that can be hurt), and that makes her vulnerable to be used over and
over again. She likes to look at the best of other people, and ignore their
worst flaws, which makes her a sucker for punishment. She doesn't believe in
keeping secrets, or at least will tell all if asked. After all, if everyone
had knowledge, everyone would be powerful, and then there wouldn't be all
these class-struggles that are so related to power. It's hard for her to
change her mind about people. Once she has a good opinion of them, it sticks.
The same goes for the bad people too; it's hard to get back in her good graces
if someone displeases her.
All of this is still true to date.
10. If you had to make a second PC for play, how would they differ from
your present PC?
Oh, jeez. Probably less exuberant and more apt to want power for it's own
sake. Less interested in knowledge just to have it, and more along the 'just
enough to get along'.
11. If we cast your PC NOW who would play them?
Tough question. I'll go with Sarah Michelle Gellar.
12. What is the driving factor in your PC's life?
The quest for knowledge is the driving force in Lucretia's life. A secondary
one is to help people, and make them happy. After all, if they're happy in
life, they're less apt to come back from the dead. A third one is to set the
restless souls to rest, destroy 'evil' undead (like vampires, or liches, or
just really, really nasty ghosts).
13. What does your PC know about politics in Amber? in the most
appropriate Great Power (GP)
Very little. She doesn't pay attention mostly, unless it's brought to her
attention. Then, she'll meticulously set down and figure out what's what and
how it affects her. If it doesn't, then, she'll go back to whatever it was she
was doing. But very little, overall.
This has changed very, very little as well. She still doesn't know what's going on even though she's involving herself in it. Bad policy that one.
14. Name three goals in the next RL 12 months for your PC?
1) Find out how all Amberites get resurrected. 2) Set about making her own
'home' shadow, one with many and varied types of undead and dead, to further
her research into the mysteries of life and death. 3) Write a book, maybe, on
mathmagical equations and how it relates to the Amber/Chaos equation.
15. How does your PC react to this statement: One death is a tragedy. A
million deaths is a statistic.
I quote: "Well, now, that's a stupid statement." And then she'd go on to
explain in great detail how both of the examples are tragedies AND
statistics.
16. Describe some National Midnight Star Headlines your PC would like
to see
"Man Blows up World -- He Sez, 'Oops.'"
"Inbred Shocker! How the Same Genes Affect YOU!"
"Flying Pigs Attack Castle -- (subtitle) 'Well, it had to happen someday,'"
17. What three wishes would your PC like to have granted?
1) "I wish I knew all the secrets of the life/death matrices."
2) "No, in English."
3) "Oh, bother and rot. Forget it. World Peace then."
18. What is your PC's animal (real or mythical) avatar?
The sparrow. Birds are mostly inoffensive. Small ones, anyhow.
This would change slightly. Instead of a sparrow, it'd be a raven. She doesn't have much of a problem with birds, just furred animals.
19. What was your PC's pre-pattern (or relevent Great Power) religion?
She was/is a scientist. She doesn't follow religion, though her science is
based upon some religion flavoured doctrines, such as the 'fight' between what
is Divine and Diabolical, and the Medium which is neither. She has vast
amounts of mathmagical equations on them, entire volumes and volumes of
nothing but extensive calculations of trying to calculate infinity, and the
variations thereof. Also, how to use these in a practical sense, and how it
affects everyday life. Um. Ok. Science & Math is her religion.
This hasn't changed a whole lot either. She's not religious. Like I said earlier, I abandoned the whole Divine, Diabolical, and Medium thing, though I might resurrect that for a different character in a different game. Science is her religion, if she had to pick one.
20. How does your PC reconcile his faith or previous faith to being an
Amberite and/or Creator
Well, it would make sense why she was so obsessed with it. That, and her study
in necromancy started because she noted an unusually long life span, and was
curious as to how it worked. That lead to her research in death, and souls,
and what exactly IS a soul anyway? She didn't have any problems, if she
starts out knowing what Amber and Chaos is.
21. A slim redheaded man in green comes to your PC's home and
announces that he is your father and that you are a Prince/Princess of
Amber and that it is time for you to come with him to claim your
birthright and journey with him to this Amber place... What do you do
and why?
Lucretia is innately trusting of people. If she thought he was telling the
truth, she'd pretty much say 'ok, let me pack up'. She'd grab her stuff and
willingly follow him to this Amber place, looking eagerly forward to it, to
the new experience, and maybe some explanations, because there were some
questions she was having on the nature of the universe, but if this universe
is really bigger than what she thought it was, then how come...
