Just a quick little note here--Gordon's 1995 movie Rude will be airing on CBC at 11:55pm (!) on Thursday, October 15th, so if you haven't been able to find it at the video store here's your chance! And a bit of a note, this movie contains massive amount of obscene language, slight nudity (hmm, I wonder if they're leaving Gordon's butt scene in...? =D), and adult situations. You have been warned. =D
Just a little cast-humour for you. Julie Khaner is definitely not out of work...besides a guest-spot on an episode of FX: The Series that I spotted her in, she's been using that wonderfully mundane and professional voice of hers to do...voiceovers for Western Union! I don't know that it's her, but I do have that sneaking suspicion every time one of those commercials comes on the radio... =D
If you didn't see it on the main page, here it is here: a link to the Save-the-show list. It is VITALLY important that you put your name on this list if you want to save the show. Add your name to it now!
Nicole said something in September of last year saying CUBE would open sometime in the spring of this year...well, it's been a long time comin', but CUBE is finally opening in select theatres down in the states, as reported by several news services and the opening page to the CUBE website. It's been given a rating of R, and hopefully the Canadian rating system will be a little more generous and give it a 14A so I can see it without getting dressed up =D. Unfortunately, though, it still hasn't opened in Canada yet. I'm hoping the "tentative" date of the 18th is still on and that I can go see it.
And since I'm feeling lazy and don't feel like going back to Nicole's filmography and putting it there, here's a review of Cube by someone who saw it at the Belgium Film Festival; and, by pure luck, the Television Education Directory (TED) had a link to a RealAudio file of the CUBE theme--you can go and take a listen. Very spooky.
While we're talking about Nicole, if you're looking for articles on Nicole's part on DS9 or other stuff relating to what she's up to now, try the Unofficial Nicole deBoer site, because I'll be late with whatever info I get. =D Here're a couple of links: An interview with UltimateTV, and another one with Entertainment News Daily.
And, just so you can't say I didn't tell you, if you didn't know it, the DS9 season premiere airs the week of September 21st--check local listings for time, channel and reruns.
Most people are going to see Cube as a preview of Nicole's acting ability on DS9, since MG isn't being aired on SFC anymore and they aren't able to watch that--I'm just hoping this drums up more interest for MG.
And speaking of that (which is what this site is about =D)...
Getting tired of staying up 'till 1AM to tape your Deepwater Black reruns, but tolerating it anyway? Well, now you won't have to, because according to Nightfox of the forum and a couple of my friends that saw advertisements for it, Deepwater Black returns to primetime on YTV! Saturday at 9:30pm. Now, Monday morning won't be nearly as groggy.
And just a bit of a personal squeal of excitement from me--this season, Friday night is the most perfect TV night. Get this--7:00pm, Forever Knight on Showcase; 8:00pm, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Dawson's Creek; and 9:00pm, Black Harbour, starring none other than Geraint Wyn Davies of that first show, Forever Knight! And to top it off, if I want I can watch the news at 10:30 and DS9 reruns after that! And if my TV appetite is still raging, Highlander reruns come on at 12:00. Is it possible to anticipate a TV schedule too much? =D
If you haven't read those interviews with Nicole, it looks like we've finally got some honest insight on the show since the producers left the forum. I quote from that UltimateTV article:
She may have gotten some experience in sci-fi fandom on "Mission Genesis," which was called "Deepwater Black" in Canada, but this only lasted one year. "It had a lot of possibilities" deBoer says of Genesis. "It was one of those shows that needed a longer run, but it got cut off." The problem was the show's placement on both the Sci-fi Channel in the U.S. and YTV in Canada, the Youth TV network. "Sci-fi would call and say 'can we make this show more mature, sexier?' Then we'd do a rewrite and Y-TV would call us and ask us to make it younger."
So therein lies the problem we must get to. Future note to letter writing to YTV--tell 'em you wouldn't mind more mature scripts at all.
Well, one little endeavor at the Bride of Chucky official website has turned up a whole crop of info about Gordon's new movies, starting with...
Bride of Chucky
Firstly, I completely take back that statement about Gord have small part as one of the people killed. =D
All righty, here's some info from the site (which, IMHO, was heavily inspired by the Scream website that nobody could find =D), condensed and formatted by yours truly:
A thorough skimming through Gord's filmography at the BoC site also revealed two new parts of his:
Clutch
So far, this indie feature film has nothing but a year (1999), a director (Richard Lett), and one actor (Tom Green) attached to it at the "improved" (that's subject to opinion) US Internet Movie Database.
However, the production journal Playback Magazine has an article on the set of that movie, and here's a link to that.
According to that article, Gord plays Spit, buddy to Martyn (David Hewlett), "a reluctant thief who accidentally kills a man while attempting to steal a rare and valuable book." Gord's character is supposed to help Martyn get rid of the body, but the body isn't as dead as they thought it was...
The movie was made for $430,000 (I'm assuming that's $CA). Yeah, I'm ROTFLMAO too. =D
A little interesting note, going back to the whole "there are only 43 Canadian actors (or writers, or directors, or music composers =D)" theory--Clutch was written/directed by the same guy who did Cube (!) and Gord's previous movie Rude.
Ice
This one is a CBC movie-of-the-week. I'm not even sure they're the same movie, but there's one movie listed at the IMDb of that title with a year (1998), a category (TV movie, which would agree with what was on Gord's bio), a producer (Roderick Taylor) and an animal trainer. =D A venture to the CBC-TV website has given me absolutely nothing. So I'm guessing it was either one of those over-and-done-with deals that no one knew about that Gord put on his filmography simply 'cuz it's recent, or it's still being debated about whether or not the thing will air at all (although the year on it would suggest that it already has aired).
Either way, all this information gathering and theorizing has given me a headache and I'm stopping for a while. =D
So there you go--everything you wanted to know about what Gord's doing after DWB/MG, you learned from me. =D
Well, imagine my shock when I decided to do a search on Nicole's new part, Dooley Gardens, only to find out how terribly botched-up the official Star Trek website got the show's origins! See the quote below--it says CBS-TV. On the first page of searches, I found out that the show is actually CBC-TV--that is, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. There's a big diff there!
Anyway, I found this snippit about the show at the CBC website:
DOOLEY GARDENS:Mary Walsh (This Hour Has 22 Minutes) and Andy Jones (Codco) co-star in this six-part raucous sitcom set in a dilapidated hockey arena in St. John's, Nfld. Canteen queen Marilyn (Walsh) and rink manager Eddie (Jones) prepare to take over the arena after the death of owner Frank Dooley—until Frank's daughter arrives from Lotusland, armed with vials of aromatherapy and West Coast management ideas.
That is, unfortunately, the only information I've been able to get about the show (considering it's a Canadian show, small and on CBC, it's probably a miracle there's that much at all). As for availability of the show for any US or overseas fans of Nicole, it doesn't look likely--I draw on the case of one of CBC's other series, Black Harbour--it has a gigantic fan following outside Canada thanks to tape trees and the Internet, but it is still only shown in Canada.
Since it isn't premiering since January, I probably won't be able to give a time or day yet--but I'll keep you posted.
...courtesy of Nicole's new employers, Paramount--thanks to AMJ for posting the URL to this article from the official Star Trek website to the SFC board. Here's the important part:
One of Canada's leading young actresses, deBoer recently completed work on the CBS-TV series "Dooley Gardens," her fifth consecutive Canadian series.
It was also revealed in this article that, like Star Trek: The Next Generation, DS9 will end after seven seasons, making this season, Nicole's first, the last for this particular series. However, if she is well-liked, I can probably see her doing a cameo or two on other Star Trek series or in one of the films.
Just in case anyone was worried about YTV taking Deepwater Black off their schedule for the *fifth* round of reruns, that looks not to be the case, as the website says. So, if you haven't gotten them all on tape yet, there's still a chance! =D
OK, now there is definitely no doubt about it--included in a small article about DS9 in the TV Guide (see article) was a picture of Nicole, in her Trill spots and Starfleet uniform. Anybody remember the articles about DWB in the beginning when they said DWB had more fashion sense? I certainly agree. =D Anyway, if you want to see the picture, it's here. Thanks to the Unofficial Nicole deBoer site for pointing it out.
Well, for any fans of Gordon, I've been able to dig up a bunch of stuff about his new movie, Bride of Chucky, the fourth movie about that killer doll. Just to note--I haven't seen any references to him being in the movie at all except at the IMDb (which, I remind you, takes information by donation, so it's possible that he's not in it at all)--nothing in the reviews or the official site. That having been said, this is what I've found out:
I also went to the official website for CUBE(if you forgot, www.cubethemovie.com) and saw that it's at the Edinburgh Film Festival: Monday, August 17th; Saturday August 22nd; and Tuesday August 25th. In addition, it's also at the Berlin International Film Festival (don't ask me when =D).
Also, here are the release dates I found at the official site:
OK, a few minutes of searching and here's what I've found out about The Net and Kelli's part in it:
Well, OK, so I don't really mean the last part. =D
Confirmation about Nicole's part on DS9 has come--according to a post on a bulletin board on the CUBE website (see post)--well, I'll just let you see for yourself.
At a con in New England this weekend, Alexander Siddig (Dr. Bashir) confirmed that Ezri Dax, the new DS9 trill, is played by Nicole de Boer.
He explained that Ezri never wanted to be a joined Trill, but she is the only one who can take on the symbiont when something goes wrong transporting Dax back to Trill.
To clear up any hostility that may have come out of my previous updates or posts at the forum/mailing list, I do wish Nicole success with her new series and role--I'm sure she'll be great in it and will bring the same amount of grace and fieriness that she did to the role of Yuna. =D And hey, with her becoming a big name, it just means more attention to her last Sci-Fi role on MG/DWB (the hits on this website prove it--the daily average has almost doubled since the announcement came, but I could never quite figure out why... =D)! And if we're lucky, and we get our movie, she'll come back during hiatus (although it'll be quite a fight between the TV movie and the offers she'll be getting by the time next summer rolls around =D).
Nicole is not the only one who you'll see on non-MG projects--it's been reported by posters on the Sci-Fi MG board and the Internet Movie Database that Kelli Taylor is starring on The Net, based on the Sandra Bullock movie of the same name (I think). I haven't been able to find any information (such as airing times, network, or any other details like that).
Well, I e-mailled Peg Music a bit ago about getting Inclonation in the US for those of you down there. I got this response from Arthur Pearson (relation, not sure =D):
KareBear wrote:
[Just curious, do you have any idea when the Deepwater Black CD will be released in the US?]
Hello KareBear,
You can order the CD through our distribution division here. The album will probably not be released in the US. For ordering info, please e-mail visa/mastercard, shipping address to sales@oakstreetmusic.ca.
Each cd is $20.00 (shipping & taxes included)
Well, if anyone's interested, here are a few spoilers about the season opener for ST: DS9, where Nicole will reportedly be introduced. Just a reminder, this hasn't been confirmed by Paramount yet, so you never know... =D Here's a few snippits about the opener, courtesy of the Star Trek News website:
Images in the Sand (Season Premiere)
(Part One)
After an assassination attempt upon his life while on Earth, Sisko decides to begin a search for the missing Prophets. Ezri Dax, played by Nicole deBoer will be introduced at the end of this episode.Ezri is a young Trill who does not want to be joined. She is in the wrong place at the wrong time when she either comes across the damedged shuttle (or is a passenger on it) that is transporting Dax home. The dameged core is hurting the Dax symbiont and it needs to be implanted NOW. So unwilling to let the Symbiont die, but very reluctantly, agrees to undergo the operation. Apparently there is a funny scene wher Worf tells Ezri that they are married.
If we succeed in getting more episodes, it is looking very likely that Nicole will not be able to reprise her part as Yuna--according to the SFTV list and several Star Trek websites, Nicole is playing the new Ezri Dax on Star Trek: Deep Space 9 (this remains yet to be confirmed, so I'm still crossing my fingers--although, filming for DS9 started on July 7, and the rumour broke out on the 8th, so...). If it is true, she probably has a commitment on that series for a couple of years (possibly until the end of its run), and will not be able to return to Toronto to shoot the series. This would mean a new Yuna (which scares the willies out of me, because I can't imagine anyone with as good a chemistry with Gordon than Nicole =D).
However, if our efforts bring about a TV movie, she may be able to shoot the TV movie over the DS9 hiatus, or something could be arranged (ie. a couple weeks off the DS9 set, perhaps?).
Even though I wish Nicole the best of luck with her career and all, I still can't help feeling betrayed here--leaving the fledgling MG/DWB universe for the humongousity of the Star Trek one. =D
According to the Internet Movie Database (who, keep in mind, get their information by donation--which means, if you said Gordon was in Godzilla, they'd believe you), Gordon is starring in Child's Play 4: Bride of Chucky, yet another movie about the demented doll. No character name is given, so I'm not thinking major role here.
This is linked to cancellation news, but I thought this was pretty big show news so I just decided to dump it here--as of the third airing of Aurora on May 13th, 1998, YTV stopped showing Deepwater Black--unless you're counting 1 in the morning, which they're keeping. This is a sign, people--YTV is giving up on DWB. Either that, or they just think people have gotten bored with the 4th time around. But it's still bad.
Unfortunately, the world of DWB has paced along at the rate of ameoba--nothing, absolutely nothing, has been happening. While I have your attention, I'll just say it here: since there has been no reply from Alex, I must assume that either too busy, doesn't care or the postmaster forgot to return it to my house, so next, I'm going for Jeff Copeland. Hopefully, I'll have more luck with contacting him since he might remember me from the SFC Mission Genesis board.
I know, wow-whee, what news. Well, you know how when you get something on your mind, you start suddenly seeing it everywhere? That's what happened to me and the Deepwater Black/Mission Genesis font--I saw it used on a FortuneCity image and asked their webmasters about it. They told me the name of the font, and I've been looking for it everywhere--but I just end up SEEING it everywhere! Just a few places I've seen it:
It's been driving me crazy! Anyway, FortuneCity also said that they had to pay for the font, so I'm hoping I can trade with somebody or something. The font is named Skia, and if you have it, you would have my eternal thanks if you e-mailed me.
Me and my incredible perceptive observation skills (or good luck) have uncovered that the Sci-Fi Channel is working a little something for their Mission Genesis website--it is definitely not completed, nor will I give out any URLs (since this isn't the first time I've sneaked a peek into an uncompleted website/revamp--and I know how it feels since it's happened to me a couple times too!)--but so far they have a tad bit more on the show, and an interactive quiz (that still needs a script). Definitely not more than say the official sites, but an improvement from what they had before.
If anyone stuck around after My Date with The President's Daughter, they might have noticed that Gordon was also in the movie right after that. I didn't see very much of the movie after his part in the beginning and bits an hour through, but it seemed to me that he was playing a psychiatrist's patient in Mind Games. His character was rammed over with a car and killed in the first scene (supposedly by the psychiatrist), but later makes appearances in a video diary-type thing. The last thing you want to do is ask me about it. Any Gord-fanatics may want to know that in this movie he sported a ying-yang tatoo on his left (?) forearm--I'm thinking temporary.
As for My Date with The President's Daughter, Nicole and Gordon were a couple of hyper-small-crime-junkies that ripped off the main character's car, who belonged to Duncan [Will Friedle]'s father. Before they were caught by the secret service (who mistakenly thought that, since they were in Duncan's car, that they were Duncan and the first-child, Halle), they robbed a convenience store with paper bags and made out all the way. Most memorable line: right before they were cornered by the police, they turned into an alley and in fitting fashion, Gordon yelled, "Hang on, we're heading into hyperspace!" which happens to be a paraphrase of what Nicole said in Awakening as Yuna. Their characters also got to meet the fictional President and First Lady. Total screen time--maybe 2 or 3 minutes, and a nice batch of dialogue, but nothing major (except that they kissed more in this movie than they did in the entire season of DWB! =D).
Sorry for the short notice people, but I just heard when I was flipping channels--Nicole and Gordon's movie, My Date With the President's Daughter, is airing this Sunday at 7pm EDT/PDT on ABC as part of ABC's Disney movie deal. Check local listings for times. This was the movie that Nicole and Gordon would be playing "Bonnie-and-Clyde-type characters" [their words, not mine!], and it also stars Will Friedle of Boy Meets World. I'm guessing their parts will be small, but if you're nuts... =D
There is no really recent news on the show to report on, so I'll just do a gloss-over on some of the older, previous news things that are significant:
DWB & MG official websites down
Sometime near the beginning of February or the end of January, the www.MissionGenesis.com domain name stopped responding. About a month later, the www.DeepwaterBlack.com domain name followed.
I'm thinking that they took the websites down. Either that, or we're finally getting that new, combined website that Richard Lane promised us months ago (in which case I think it's pretty stupid that they should do it now, seeing how everyone's so freaked out about the cancellation--scaring the heck out of us! =D).
Also, the DWB and MG e-mail addresses at Empire Entertainment do not work.
DWB Movie
When Jeff Copeland first told the fans about the Deepwater Black CD at the SFC Mission Genesis board, there was also this little tidbit at the end:
"[The CD is] all part of a bigger music deal were putting together to provide an awesome sound track for a DWB movie. The working title for the movie is OMEGA 4. The concept is complete. We have a feature releasing distributor very interested. Our next step is the treatment. It's a rather dark gothic story set one year into there mission. I hope to share this story with our fans on the big screen sometime in the near FUTURE....-J"
I'm guessing that since the show is cancelled, this idea has also been axed, but the producers could always "pull a Star Trek" and do the movie. I think it would be a great way to get attention about the MG universe, which is still vast and unexplored.
DWB Merchandising
Richard Lane, who's in charge of the art direction for Deepwater Black, made a couple posts at the SFC board, and in one of those posts was this:
When we continue with another order of episodes we plan on releasing merchandise related to all areas of the show. Guns, models, cd-roms and of course clothes. We made a lot of our own but also we used existing clothing and built on them. Sometime this year we hope to be selling t-shirts and caps with the shows logo on it. We would like to have another line with the really cool stuff, including jackets, tops, pants and shoes.
Because the second order of nine episodes was never confirmed, there was a lot of uncertainty about whether the merchandising would be coming out. Then I dug up this press release about Sunbow (MG/DWB's distributor) and their liscensing plans:
"...[Sunbow] has entered into a licensing agreement with apparel manufacturer Balzout for a line of men's and women's screen-printed T-shirts and tops for Deepwater Black that will be available in the U.S. and Latin America. Additionally, it has tabbed Trigger as the series' licensing agent in the U.K."
I'm guessing the US manufacturer will sell to Canada too (and if not, there's always mail order! =D)--although with the cancellation news, this is still uncertain (but it is one of the reasons why the show might NOT be cancelled).
In addition to that, the company that put out the Inclonation, the DWB CD (info), Peg Music, also issued a bunch of Deepwater Black Inclonation temporary tattoos. You can order them by e-mailing oak@oakstreetmusic.ca with your name and address and a request, or by using their toll-free fax number: 1-800-848-5972.
DWB Rounder
This is not really related to DWB--the first-ever Deepwater Black/Mission Genesis story-rounder is taking place at Patricia's Mission Genesis board. So far, no parts have been written since February (and the last part was written by me--I think I just left a hard cliffhanger! =D). If you would like to write a part, post it to the board after reading the rules and all the previous parts (which you can find on Deck 5).
According to an article written in December '97 in PlayBack magazine, Craig Kirkwood's new movie, ru2gether?, is either in production right now or is just finishing, since it was slated for a spring shoot. It is directed and produced by Roger Montgomery, who is doing his first feature film for the first time. The film is being made for 2.9 million [US], and is a [quote] "fish out of water story" of a black teen in a small white town who is given a satellite dish as a graduation present. Tuning in to the multichannel universe he realizes there is a whole world of black culture he has not been exposed to, and goes to the big city to seek the black experience. [end quote] Besides Craig, it is also starring Clarence Williams iii (Hoodlums) and Deborah Lobban (Henry and Verlin), with Boyz N the Hood Director-of-Photography Charles Mills shooting.
Also according to PlayBack Magazine, the Cineplex Odeon chain of theatres supposedly acquired the Canadian distribution rights to Nicole's movie, CUBE. It was slated for a January 1998 theatrical release, but I never saw anything about it.
Way back in October 21st of 1996, PlayBack also claimed that the Sci-Fi Channel was having some interest in CUBE, even before it had begun production (in November 18th, 1996). And just to let you know how big this thing is, the pricetag on CUBE is nice and light--$700,000 [CA, I assume].
I'm not very sure, but I think I've found the address and phone number for the company that produced CUBE. I'm also not sure if this is of any relevance, but just to let you know I had it. =D
As if it isn't obvious, this quote comes from PlayBack Magazine, and it's just a bit about Sara's first feature film, The Eternal Husband (though it doesn't mention her):
Toronto's Chris Philpott will see his first feature The Eternal Husband screened at the upcoming Montreal World Film Festival. Quite a feat considering he's a self-taught filmmaker who shot the film in three weeks on a $47,000 budget.
Philpott adapted the script from a Dostoyevski novella of the same name, but set the story in contemporary Toronto, focusing on an old rivalry between two male friends haunted by offenses committed against each other in the past which culminate in a violent settling of accounts.
Paul Babiak (Atom Egoyan's Next of Kin) and Richard Hughes (Brandon Tartikoff's Men) star.
Philpott's producing partners are Stacey Donen (Chinese Chocolate) and Mark Caswel (line producer of The Circle Game), who also shot the film. They are now on the hunt for a distributor.
Philpott will also be packing three feature scripts in his suitcase for Montreal: The Mad Woman's Diary, the tale of a young girl's discovery of a diary belonging to her grandmother who died in an asylum; Strings, where a grown-up Pinocchio, down on his luck and disillusioned, searches for the blue fairy to turn him back into a puppet; and Opposites, a romantic comedy about mismatched couples.
I am not sure of Sara's part in the movie.
