Psionics at 2031
After June the 13th 2031 (the Day of Chaos) people were given the gift of psionics. These powers existed in mankind even before the gate opening, but were very weak due to insufficient energy flow from either the Positive Energy Plane or the Negative Energy Plane. After the accident of the Swifter project, an infinite energy source was created to channel the NEP energy to the world, thus fueling the powers of the mind.
At the first month the powers were uncontrolled, mostly because people didn’t know they had it. Then slow mastering of the powers began. At first all that was learned was through trial and error, but after several months small schools began to pop up. The official institute for learning psionics was founded by the Psi Core at September 2033, and is called “The University of the Mind”. Study at the university is very expensive, but one can gain mastering of the powers in a two years program.
The Psi Core started as an unofficial organization of people who wanted to form a group that can handle psionics study and organization. The government gave it an official seal at March 2032 - less than a year after the Day of Chaos. Although it is a governmental organization, it is funded by several MegaCorps which developed interest in the psionics area.
One of the major objectives of the Psi Core, besides organizing psionics studies, is to monitor the psionics usage. The Psi Core uses undercover operatives that keep an eye on psionics users mainly to prevent invasion of privacy and illegal activities. The Core has legal jurisdiction with regards to psionically oriented crimes, and doesn’t hesitate to execute it.
The leaders of the Core are the seven prophets. The prophets are the seven people that posses the highest psionics powers. They are the spiritual leaders of the Psi Core, and of humanity as a whole. People believe, and not unjustly, that the prophets hold knowledge far greater than any regular human. The fact that their psi powers are very strong enables them to reach a very high spiritual state, which is far greater than was available before humanity had psionics. They can predict major events in the future and take measures to prevent any disastrous outcomes, but usually restrain themselves from interfering.
The seven prophets believe that although the gate opening to the NEP provided the human race with an ability it could only dream of before, it may also destroy it. The energy that flows from the Negative Energy Plane is negative in essence, and although it gave us a very powerful ability, they say it’s only a side effect. There is an evil presence on earth and humanity is like a man walking blindfolded on the edge of a very high cliff. The prophets keep warning that there is a very powerful evil “being” (that’s the best word they can use to describe what they sense) in existence on the other side of the gate that for some reason can’t enter our world. Once it will enter our world, nothing will be the same. If we thought our lives have changed after the Day of Chaos, we have only seen the tip of the iceberg. Somehow the gate must be sealed and the connection to the NEP must be cut off or else we are doomed.
