The Swifter Project
GenWay started as a small company that researched for new energy sources. Back at the first decade of the 21st century they were channeled large funds by the government, for their search for energy. This gave GenWay the boost it needed to become one of the largest megacorps. They build energy sources starting from small batteries all the way to nuclear reactors.
When Dr. Kirshov researched on his theories regarding the parallel energy planes, it made some people at GenWay very interested. They saw an opportunity to a new source of pure energy, that can be tapped to their own needs.
Dr. Kirshov joined GenWay starting at May 2016, just after he got his Dr. degree. He was given a small staff and some equipment and was given freedom in his research for the purpose of learning more about his theory. In about two weeks, Dr. Simmings was able to evaluate the potential of the parallel planes. His suggestion was to carry the research into the NEP (Negative Energy Planes) because the energy potential there is much higher.
Then came the idea of the Swifter project. Dr. Simmings c Dr. Simmings came up with the idea of harnessing the pure negative energy into a weapon like device. The weapon that would be created would be a mass destruction wed be more devastating than the nuclear bomb, and with less side effects.
There were two problems with the project. The first one was that Dr. Kirshov wouldn’t use his research to create a weapon. He was too idealistic. After a while he wouldn’t go on with the project and was taken cared of by GenWay. The company had learned most of his knowledge by then and they couldn’t allow him to go out and talk.
The other problem was more serious than the first. People who were involved with the project were having all sort of accidents and strange unexplained effects. At first there were mild accidents but as the research advanced, the accidents and strange occurrences grew in frequency and amplitude. It took only a month for most of the initial crew of the Swifter project to get killed by some accident or strange phenomena (like an unexplained lethal virus that affected Dr. Simmings). Only Dr. Kirshov (who was still with the project back then) wasn’t affected for some reason. The area around the R&D center was also affected and the project had to be relocated to Texas. That way the project leaders felt that the side-effects would be less noticed.
The project never made it’s deadlines or even kept close to the predetermined schedule. The reason was that the project staff developed a tendency to die, hard disks to crash, labs to collapse in earthquakes, and countless other tendencies that made it impossible to make normal progress. It was like a dance of Tango - two steps forward and then a step back.
The world also had it’s share of the experiments side effects, like the unexplained downfall of mankind. The increased occurrence frequency of floods, earthquakes, famine, plagues is due to openings of gateways to the NEP. The raise of corruption, the downfall of the governments, the increased crime rates and the shattered human social order are all results of the Swifter project.
The final blow to the project took place on Friday, the 13th of June 2031 at 3:13pm. An experiment accident happened when a short circuit at one of the force field generators resulted in it’s explosion and crashing of the force field. The backup generators also malfunctioned due to a defective circuit that wasn’t replaced because the inspection that was planned for Wednesday was postponed to Monday. The result was that a huge gateway was left open from the NEP to the physical world. It took only an hour for the strange occurrences to destroy what was left of the R&D facility. The gateway opening was felt all around the world when accidents and unexplained phenomena's were starting to occur at a devastating rate.
Things relaxed a day or two later, but the casualties count was at several thousands. The world was not the same thereafter. The most felt effect is that people started to notice they have psychic abilities. It starts with wild and uncontrolled precognition, mind reading, suggestion implanting and even physical matter manipulation.
But what scares the most is that there is something strange no one can put a finger on. Something threatening and sinister. Some evil presence that entered the world through the open gateway. The new prophets say that mankind had only seen the tip of the iceberg because there is something much worse waiting to enter our world. Something so intense in its power that it cannot be percepted with our limited 5 senses.
Darker days have indeed arrived, and are here to stay for quite a while.
