Four meters high and made of gray granite, the shrine was made for Nectanebo II, and predates the more modern temple that it sits inside.

Another amusing story: the inner sanctum was an extremely sacred place, where no one but the high priest was allowed to go. So when he went in here to do his thing, he had a rope tied around one of his legs and left the coil outside of the room of the shrine. That way, if he died, they could just reel him back outside without having to go in and get him -- defiling the temple as they did.

I figure this actually had to have happened at some point for such a precaution to be taken. I just wonder what they did with the poor guy who went in to get the dead priest.

I smell a "Dilbert" cartoon in all of this -- something along the lines of "bad jobs throughout history."
