The Sphinx -- Cairo
This is the mighty Sphinx, seen from the road
coming down from the plateau proper.
You'll note the nose is missing. It's been
gone for a long time, now. One story has it that when Napoleon
treked through, his soldiers shot its nose off while using the
head for target practice, back when the head was all that was
sticking out of the sands.
In truth, it was broken off by a religious
fellow who decried the thing as a heathen idol. Considering what
just happened in Afghanistan, I suppose we should be grateful
that said fellow didn't have access to dynamite. It also had
a false beard at one time, courtesy of Thutmosis IV, but it broke
off at some point. Its fragments -- or plaster casts of those
fragments, I forget which -- can be found in the Cairo Museum
