Giza Pyramids -- Subsidiary Pyramids

And here we are passing by..., hmm. This is either the other side of Menkaure's Pyramid or it's one of the three so-called "subsidiary pyramids" by Khufu's Pyramid. Not content with just one big Pyramid, Khufu had them crank out three more. I think that's where he planted the family dog.

It's not unusual to have large-scale constructions like that, though. In fact, the plateau of Giza was once home to immense funerary complexes, with temples and causeways and ramps and, of course, little huts to buy articles of clothing for early tourists. I understand that "I buried the Pharaoh at Letopolis and all I got was this lousy loincloth" and "My other felucca is a Mercedes" were popular at the time.

These days, there's not much of these complexes left. The parts were taken away to build other Pyramids, temples, mastabas and workers' houses. In a way, it reminds me of the common practice of letting bodies lie in a cemetery for so long and then digging them up so someone else's corpse can have the space. Waste not -- want not!
