Philae Temple

One day, we were all supposed to go to Philae Temple, which is on an island in the middle of the Nile. However, both Ceej and I were under the weather, so we stayed on the boat while Mom and Gail went.

This is the site of one of the better-preserved temples of the late period, but in a sense that's kind of a cheat. When they built the old dam in 1898, the temple was submerged for all but two months out of the year. Then they were going to built the new, high dam, and that would have permanently submerged it.

So, like Abu Simbel -- which I want to see someday -- the temple was cut apart and reconstructed elsewhere while they built the new dam. The new location, here, was made to look just like the old islet it was on, and it is well above the flood zone, so you can go see it all year long.

I really wish I'd felt better. This looks so cool. (Ow ow ow)
