Monique DiBarbrac walked alone down the school hallway. She was heading toward Slayer Headquarters, also known as the school library. She was the new Slayer, since Buffy had died in battle against Lagos. Monique was sixteen, red hair, green eyes, and about as tall as Buffy had been, 5'4. Lagos was still around, lurking somewhere in the cities sewer system. But for now it was training time. Only being the new Slayer for a week hadn’t brought her up to her full strength. I hope he doesn’t give me that ‘Chosen One’ speech. She thought to herself. She reached the library doors and pushed them open. She saw her watcher, Wesley Wyndham-Price, fighting and imaginary demon with his sword, babbling in his, ‘oh so British’ accent. "Will you be ready if a vampire attacks from behind you?" he yelled and prepared to slice the air. He brought the sword up above his so fast that it flew from his hands. Monique grabbed it out of the air just before it hit her face.

"Nice form," she remarked sarcastically. Being the Slayer doesn’t mean you have to be nice to your Watcher.

Wesley only looked mildly embarrassed as her straightened his hair and shirt saying, "Ah, Monique, impeccable timing. Good catch, by the way."

She started tapping the sword against her palm and walked over to the table, "You know, you really should watch your antics. I know you don’t like me, But that’s no reason to throw a sword at me." She joked as she shook her index finger at him.

"Yes well, terribly sorry." Then he cleared his throat and took another sword that was lying on the table. "Shall we get started?" Monique sighed and rose from her chair. "You show me good, steady progress with the battle swords and I might consider you taking an early break."

"Yeah me!" she said in mock excitement, raising her hands in a gesture of happiness.

"Monique, stop with the sarcasm, put on your pads." He ordered. Monique looked mildly amused by this, "I’m not going to need pads to fight you." She proclaimed.

Wesley accepted her challenge, "Well, we’ll see about that." he said. Then he raised his sword to a salute, "Un Guard." he said.

They engaged in mock battle, or so in Monique’s eyes. She had inherited Buffy’s stubbornness. She parried his first strike to her abdomen, and hit him in the face with her fist with such power he stumbled back and landed on his butt. Monique just smiled as she tapped the sword on his heart area, "Good," she commented, "You almost beat me this time," she praised sarcastically.

"Oh I don’t know," boomed a voice from behind her. She spun around to face it. "I’d say a bit sloppy, even for an amateur." Angel commented cruelly. "You beat him because he’s to scared to strike a new Slayer where it hurts. You still need a lot or work in your battle field."

Monique gave him the evil eye once over. "And you might be?" she questioned.

Wesley was just coming out of it, "Ah, Angel, I’m glad you came." he said. "Monique, this is Angel. He’s a vampire with a soul. And therefore will help you train." he ordered.

She starred hatefully at Angel, "Fine." she simply said, then thought a moment. Realizing something, she said, "Hey you’re that vamp dude that was the scourge of Europe, aren’t you?" she accused.

Angel looked at her with a if-looks-could-kill, look, "I was that evil," he shot back at her, hating her for what reason he couldn’t understand. "But I don’t bite anymore," he told her coldly.

"Wow," she exclaimed, throwing up her hands, "Sorry, didn’t want to push any bottons." she said sarcastically.

Wesley took it upon himself to smooth over the situation, "Now, now. Stop your fighting children." he scolded. "Angel, just because Monique replaced Buffy, doesn’t make your bickering alright." he told them.

Angel and Monique just starred at each other in a murderous look. "Whatever." She said breaking their stare and gripping her sword better. "I want to kick your butt anyway." she said tossing the battle sword to him. She then picked up the battle sword that Wesley was using and prepared for battle. "Hit me with your best shot." she challenged.

Angel got into his fighting stance and prepared for battle, "You sure you can handle it?" he joked. She just eyed him hatefully. And they lunged into a superior deciding fight.

Fists and legs and swords flying is all directions the battle raged on for fifteen minutes before being stopped by Wesley. "Ok, that’s enough. You guys are going to end up killing each other." he chuckled and looked off into the distance. "I wonder what Buffy would think about you killing her boyfriend." he said, more to himself then to anyone else.

Still out of breath and breaking the stare of hate he snapped her head to Her Watcher. "Boyfriend?" she questioned in disbelief. "It’s ok to let him help every once on a while, but Boyfriend? How could you allowed that?" she babbled on. Wesley looked at her. "I didn’t want it to be but I couldn’t stop it.

She heard Angel growl and she turned to see a single tear run down his face. "I’m sorry. I didn’t know you guys were that close. Are you alright?" she asked, suddenly feeling sympathy for him. But it soon passed. "Anyway, Buffy is of the past. I am the future. I’m not going to choke that easily."

Just then Angel lost his temper. He charged Monique and grabbed her by the throat pinning her up against the wall. "Don’t you ever say anything like that about Buffy again Slayer!" he yelled at her.

He wasn’t choking her so she smiled and said, "Sorry, I don’t care about Bloodsucking fiends." she told him harshly. She saw Angel flinch and delighted in it. She hated all vamps. This one was no different to her. Even thought Buffy had a mushy heart about him, she was not so easy.

He just let go of her and backed off slowly eyeing her murderously. "Don’t look at me that way, I didn’t kill your Beloved Buffy." she told him out righted like.

"You right." he said as a matter of fact like. "You didn’t, but you replaced the one woman that I have ever loved. I think that’s grounds to hate you like hell. And believe me I hate Hell, I’ve been there." then he gave her one last glare and stalked out of the library.

"Touchy." Monique simply said.

Being in a graveyard wasn’t the best place to be on a Saturday night. At least this the last location on her patrol. She sat on a headstone, Buffy’s usual place of chilling while patrolling. Just then a vamp popped out of the grave beside her. She went instantly into action. She whipped out her stake that Wesley had given her, and staked it no problem. A young baby vamp. "This is so boring. There’s no strong vampires that I can demolish." she sighed and decided to pack it in.

Just at the same time Angel stepped from behind a tree that was in front of the gravestone. "So are you going to take Buffy’s spot too?" he asked cruelly. He hadn’t been this cruel since he was Angelus.

"Oh great. It’s grievie vampie. I really don’t feel like battling it out with you. It’s late, I’m tired and I don’t want to play who can put down who, okay?" She didn’t even realize that as she was saying this she and Angel were moving closer together. By the time she was finished saying the last word they were centimeters apart.

"Okay." was all he could think of at that moment. He was feeling like he had felt when Buffy was this close to him. "I’ll just go. I should go." he stammered.

"Yeah," she managed totally captivated by his eyes and his lips. They were now so close she could feel the faint stirring of breath against her cheek.

"Yeah." then finally their lips moved until they were about to brush against each other when Monique was suddenly pulled away by an attacking demon. She fought it and knock it down and put her hands around it’s neck and choked the breath out of it, and it finally passed out and suffocated.

She got up and dusted herself off and looked at the waiting Angel. "Well that brought us to our senses didn’t it?" He nodded and they started moving closer and again. Just when his arms went instinctively around her she shook her head and backed away. "I should go. I really shouldn’t do this. You’re a vampire and I’m a Slayer. And also you’re helping me train so I don’t think that it’s a very good idea. Right? I mean, you’ve been though this before?"

Angel nodded, "Yeah, that would be the smart thing to do. Just walk way and don’t get caught like this again. Yeah good idea." he paused and she nodded keeping her distance. "Do you want me to walk you home?"

Monique nodded, "Yeah, that would be nice." then they walked closer paused in front of each other then walked toward Monique’s house.

At the front door to Her house they stopped and faced each other. "I guess I’ll see you tomorrow night for training and patrolling?" she said, it was more of a statement then a question.

Angel nodded, "Yeah, bye." was all he could think about saying. This was Monique, this wasn’t his Buffy. "Tomorrow." she nodded and he smiled at her and she him and then he turned and left.

Monique breathed a sigh of relief and turned and unlocked the door to her house and sauntered in tiredly. "Mom!" she called, "Are you gone?" once she was satisfied that her mom was at her store, she walked slowly up the stairs to her room. She quickly changed into her pajamas, a black tank top and silk light cyan pajama bottoms. Sighing she picked up her journal and started to write about her day.

Angel watched from her window. Miss. Summers had moved back to L.A. after Buffy’s death, four months ago. Monique and her mom Margot moved in last month a week after Joyce moved out. Her family was part French, that’s why they have French names. Her father’s name was Stephan, he worked in a business that sells stylish clothes, so he was never around. Angel thought about how similar her and Buffy were. Attitude, way of dressing, and strength. Also she treats Wesley with no respect at all, same as Buffy. He was beginning to wonder if Monique had blonde hair, would she look exactly like Buffy? No the face was a little different. She didn’t have the strange, but cute, nose, and she had a few freckles. She also had a birth mark on her left hand on the middle finger knuckle.

Monique knew that he was watching her, but she made it look like she didn’t have the slightest clue. She kept on writing, when she got to the part where she met Angel, she paused. While she was fighting with Angel she had a strange feeling of deja vu wash over her. She felt like she hated him so much, except at the same time, wanted to kiss him. It had been to weirdest feeling she had ever experienced. So she wrote just that.

He watched her carry out the same bedtime rituals as the previous Slayer had and when she was snuggled into her bed and her eyes were closed, he waited. Once he was sure she was sleeping, he crept into the house. It’s true a vampire can’t come in unless it’s invited, but he had been invited by Buffy, and this was the same house. He crept quietly up to Monique’s bed and gazed down at her. He sat softly on the bed and stroked her face.

Monique had fallen asleep so she didn’t notice as he leaned down and placed a small kiss on her forehead, "Good night." he whisper and then left her room the same way he had come in.

At school Monique was couldn’t wait to tell her friends, Danielle and Kyle-but we all call him Skip. Spotting them she yelled, "Danny, Skip. Wait up?" She ran and caught up to them.

"What’s up Minnie?" the was Danielle’s nick name for her. They called her Danny and Kyle was, as you already know, Skip.

"Yeah, did you kick Wesley’s butt in sparring?" Skip asked anxiously. He hated Wesley so much. All his British excellence and those gross ties.

"Total kick." She answered. "He didn’t have a chance."

"I hate Wesley." Danny told them. "He’s so, well you know, ew. I mean, he tells us what to do all the time. We’re teens we don’t do orders."

"Totally." Monique confirmed. "But, listen to this. I’ve got the most hunky guy ever to train with me." she told them excitedly.

"Who?" Danny asked. Hoping that Monique didn’t like him, so she could maybe date him.

"Well, his name is Angel. He’s a vampire. But he has a soul. So I guess that means he’s a good guy."

"A vampire?" Skip asked amused. "You think that a vampire can be a good guy. I thought that you kill vamps. Not crunch on them."

"I do. I just when he’s around. It’s like the lights dim everywhere else. You know how it’s like that for some guys?" she said.

Danielle thought a moment. "Yeah, I guess you’re right. But I want to meet this perfect, hunky vamp. Invite him to come to the Bronze." She suggested.

"I don’t know, I do have to train and patrol." she told her sadly.

Skip decided to be helpful. "I know, how about after training tell Loser that you’re taking a break and then once you’re out the door, invite him to go Bronzing with you and your cool, hip, happening friends."

"Yeah, whatever Skip." Monique said. When the bell to go to home room sounded they moaned and started off to do the school thing.

Angel trudged around his mansion home. He had moved back in there after Buffy had died to help with the slaying while the new Slayer was being called. He gave Cordelia money to go to Phoenix to visit her godparents. He moaned and started his ritual grieving over Buffy. He missed her scent and her smile. He missed her laugh and missed holding her when she cried. He just missed walking her home after a long night of slaying. He also missed...well everything about her. Just as he was finishing going over all the things he missed about her, he smelt her. The sweet scent of the sun and flowers, and a hint of fresh rain. He froze, hearing someone behind him.

"Hey, hansom." he greeted him.

Angel slowly turned around to come face to face with his lost love, Buffy. "Buffy?" he asked dumbly.

"Angel?" she said in the same expression as him, mocking him. "Of course it’s me. What you think you’re dreaming or something?" she asked him matter o’ fact like.

Angel pulled her into a great hug and started to weep. "Oh Buffy, I’ve missed her so much." he cried. He pulled back and admired her. "But you’re dead." he said.

"Yeah. It’s kind of a drag. But the Slayer is my reincarnate, so I guess I go on." she told him flatly. He just looked a her quizzically. "You know, sort of a double with a different face and voice, but same personality. Come on Angel. I didn’t want you to be lonely. So I made a double of myself. That’s why you had that strange Buffy love feeling when you were about to kiss in the graveyard." she said casually.

Angel looked embarrassed. "You know about that?"

"Of course. But of course you have to be all noble and not plant one on her. You know, I love red hair. That’s why I chose her. Also she’s a Slayer and I thought that only a Slayer would understand your... condition." she just smiled and moved closer to him. Putting her arms around him. Angel just looked down at her, he was so happy to see her, but was so scared that she couldn’t stay.

"Why are you here? I am happy you are but, why are you?" he asked her.

"I wanted to see you and tell you to climb out of the grievy hole you’re digging yourself and to tell you to love again. Don’t worry about me, Monique is me. I know she doesn’t really look like it, but she is. You didn’t need my permission, but I guess you had to have it. I can’t stay long, and don’t worry about the curse, there’s no happiness clause. I’m not the jealous possessive type." she smiled and reached up and kissed him and he her. They stood there embracing each other.

When they pulled apart he said, "I love you." she smiled.

"I love you, too. But, love Monique and love me." he told him and kissed him one final time, and moved away. "Bye, Angel."

He looked sad saying, "Bye Buffy." with that she was gone and all that remained was her scent on his black tank shirt.

Monique and Angel were battling it out with the swords again. She took a swing at his head, but he easily ducked and swung for her leg, cutting though the thick armor. They had armor on so this was a real sparring. She glowered at him and sliced the armor padding on his back. "Square route of nine." he asked and dodged her fist, knocking her back against the wall.

Quickly recovering she answered, "Three." She looked proudly at him and swung the sword toward his right leg. "That one was easy," she told him.

He chuckled and thought of a harder one as he knocked her to the ground and pinned her down. "Square route of hundred forty-four," still an easy one but oh well.

They landed face to face a few millimeters apart. "Twelve." she answered kicking him off her and preparing for the next attack. Angel did the same and asked, "Thirty six’s square route." then charged her again and they engaged in a fury of attacks and parries.

"Um, six." she answered as they got stuck in a double attack. She then pushed him back to the ground and took her sword and thrust it towards his heart. Stopping just in time so she wouldn’t kill him. "I win." she claimed.

Angel chuckled as she rolled off him and faced Wesley. "Yeah. You’re getting pretty good at your math, too." he told her.

"Whatever, Angel." she retorted. Turning to her Watcher she asked, "So... how’d I do?" with a shining smile plastered on her face.

Wesley looked up from his chart. "Your energy and reflex’s are skyrocketing. You have shown good progress and I say you can go to the Bronze, or wherever it is you kids go these days." He was still confused as to what teens enjoy doing.

Monique looked as though she had just heard the most unbelievable thing in the world, which it was. Wesley was allowing her to go to the Bronze, and was actually being cool about it? Wow. "Thanks, Wesley." she turned to Angel, "Hey, by the way. Do you want to go Bronzing tonight with me?" she asked hopefully.

Angel didn’t even hesitate to answer. "Yeah, sure." she was so like Buffy in every way almost. "I’m in." he continued.

"Good." she said happily. "This will be, like, so cool."

Monique, Danielle, Skip and Angel entered Bronze in two’s. Skip and Danielle were holding hands and Angel and Monique were walking close together. Monique sighed and waved them all to a table that was empty. They pushed thought the crowds and found the table no sweat. Monique sat across from Danielle and Skip and Angel sat not really next to Danielle or Monique, kind of in the middle.

"So." Danielle spoke up. "Angel. You’re the guy that Minnie has been talking about." It was more of a statement then a question. Angel was at a loss. "Minnie?" he asked.

Monique was the first the explain. "That’s my nick name. It started as Monnie, but somehow got changed to Minnie." Angel nodded.

"You’ve been talking about me?" he asked, a little amused.

Monique looked at her hand and nodded her head slyly. "Sometimes." she told him.

Skip, being his usual self spoke up to stretch the truth. "Oh come on." he said. Monique looked up at him, startled. So did Angel. "You talk about him all the time. Ever since you first saw him, you told us everything, up to every boring detail. Man you are really at the putting things lightly aren’t you?"

Monique just stared on in surprise. "I can’t believe you just did that." she said. Then to lighten up everything she burst out laughing. So did Danielle and Skip, and Angel.

After a while of chit chatting, and a few dances between Skip and Danielle, Monique and Skip, and even Danielle and Angel. But Angel and Monique didn’t dance, yet.

It was close to eleven o’ clock and a favorite slow song of Monique’s came on. Angel liked this song too. So he stood and held his hand out to her, "Dance with me?" he asked her.

She just smiled, the whole world fell away as she took his hand and he led her onto the dance floor.

//There is a chair in my head,
On which I used to sit,
Took a pencil and I wrote,
The following on it.
//

Monique and I coupled and swayed to the music. She was so much like Buffy. The way she moved and the way she fought. The size of her petite body and the color of her shining eyes. It was so familiar. Buffy had been right, I do feel like I felt when Buffy was around, around her.

//Now there’s a key
Where my wonderful mouth used to be.
Dig it up and throw it at me,
Dig it up and throw it at me
//

He’s so hunky. It’s weird how I hated him so much until that night in the graveyard. I think I’m in love with him. I was just so furious at him for some reason, and then I just fell for him in the graveyard. We were so close to kissing. He’s a vamp, I’m a Slayer, he’s supposed to be the enemy.

//Where can run to,
Where can I hide,
Who will I turn to too.
Now I’m in a virgin state of mind.
//

They swayed through the whole song, just holding each other like they had know each other forever. The song seem distant to them now. Like a faint whisper in a wide open sunlit field.

//Got a knife to disengage
the voids that I can’t bear,
To cut out words that I have written,
On my chair

Like, Do you think I’m sexy,
Do you think I really care.
Can I burn the maze as I grow,
Can I? I don’t think so.
//

She started to hum to the tune unconsciously as they moved to the music. He just smiled and he rested him chin on her head and listened to her heart as the song continued to play a instrumental segment.

//Can I burn the maze as I grow,
Can I, I don’t think so,
Where can I run to,
Where can I hide,
Who will I turn to.
Now I’m in a virgin state of mind.
A virgin state of mind,
Virgin state of mind
Virgin state of mind...
//

The song faded away, and Monique and Angel reluctantly pulled apart and headed back to the table. Danielle was smiling dreamily at them. Skip, or Kyle, was taking a gulp from him cup.

"Wow," Danielle exclaimed. "You guys have got to be the cutest couple on the whole dance flour." then she shook out of her daze and took a sip from her coffee cup.

Monique just smiled and took her seat again and this time Angel, almost from instinct, came over to stand behind her, slipping his arms around her waist. She yawned, not even noticing because it felt so ordinary, and said, "I’m beat. I’m gonna call it a night." slipping from her stool.

Danielle and Kyle said their good byes and Angel followed her out the Bronzes exit door. "Hey." he called.

She turned around. "Hey." she answered.

"Need some company walking home?" he asked politely.

She smiled and said, "Sure, why not." then they walked side by side towards Monique’s house.

 -

At Monique’s front steps. They said there good byes and moved closer. "Um, I guess this means I get a good night kiss?" she asked sweetly. But she already knew the answer to that question.

Angel just smiled and they closed the distance between them. They were only a few hairs width apart. Then his lips were in hers. It was a wow, kiss. It was like they had kissed before. It was just a sweet, innocent little kiss. And they decided to leave it at that. Pulling apart before it got more passionate. "Good night, Minnie." he joked with a grin. They were still close enough to kiss.

"Good night." she answered him. Then with a whole lot of reluctance they widened the distance between them and Monique blew him a kiss and unlocked the door to go in.

Angel just smiled and watched her until the door blocked his loving gaze. Then he turned on his heel and walked into the night. As he headed to his mansion he thought Replacements are weird that way.
