This is my original novel, Atanzi, that started off in the Beauty and the Beast universe as a concept about Vincent's possible origins but then it took on a life of it's own. It was published as a zine in May of 1993 by Roaring Lion Press by me. This is the burb from that zine:
For over ten thousand centuries there was a loose knit Confederation of
planets deep in the heart of the galaxy. 700 years ago a war began between
the ancient Atanzi and the upstart Rumnulska. The Atanzi, a highly civilized
leonine appearing humanoid race, had been the chief avovocates for peace
for the Confederation until the savage lizard like Rumnulska had been admitted
to the Confederation. The Rumnulska hated the Atanzi and their policies
and began a campaign to seize control of all the territories and power
that the Atanzi had long held on to. It started with attacks on small trading
ships then escalated to the capture of Confederation exploring vessels
on the borders between the Empire and the Confederation territories.
The Confederation
drui-crusier, L'wassen, commanded by Admi Asenti Ky'tulendu was one of
those ships attacked. Instead of letting his crew get captured, Ky'tulendu
fought and ran from his attackers, but in doing so he inadvently plunged
his ship deep into Rumnulska territory only to be shot down over the third
planet in an unmapped star system on the galaxy's rim. Some his crew survived
the crash, but the ship was damaged beyond repair and their were completely
cut off from the Confederation.
The survivors found themselves stranded on a primitive planet already inhabited
by humans living at very low technological levels. That was only one of
many problems. They were completely cut off from the Confederation and
feared sending a message least the Rumnulska return to finish them off.
Their food, clothing, and medical supplies would soon run out and they
would be forced to live off the land and because the techical levels of
the planet were so low they would not be able to manufacturer replacements
for their machines and energy supplies. The biggest problem, however, would
be in finding ways to coexist with the native populations.
The natives were aggressive humans which inital survey data had shown to
be hostile to any strangers and who also warred among themselves to gain
territory and possessions. They were also very supersititious and intolerant
of differences of appearance, race, ethnic background, or religion. The
mere physical appearances of the Atanzi, and the surviving Tranquils and
Soarettes would make them viewed as animals, devils or worse by most of
the humans on the planet.
Luckily, the res-skinned natives near their crash site were friendly and welcomed the strangers and helped them set up a settlement. The only exception was their chief, Thunder-Arrow, who objected strenuously to his son, In The Forest, falling in love with O'vettun, one of the female Atanzi. Even Ky'tulendu was not immune to the bonding pulls the Atanzi and these friendly humans had towards one another. The Atanzi and the natives vowed to help one another and share their technologies and knowledge, but Thunder-Arrow wanted war and to drive the animal men from his lands. Who will the winner? And can the Atanzi survive both the natives and the everpresent threat of the return of the Rumnulska, and make a life for themselves on this new world? Find out in ATANZI: Beginnnings.
