EXPERIMENTS

In order to do a comparison of the four dishes, we derived eight experiments over several terrain types to get a general impression of the ability of the dishes.

The terrain types were as follows:

BUILDINGS

The reason for the eight different land types, was because the primary function of the Parabolic Reflector Dish, today, is bird watching, and we thought that these areas were mainly where birds might be found.

As with all previous experiments, these experiments were conducted under the optimal conditions dictated in the Factors section of the project. Most of the factors were held at bay due to the season that the experiments were conducted in. Summer, the months of November and December and January. These months were the hottest and also very dry. The humidity was very low, as there had previously been a large drought, thus the air was parched, creating perhaps the most ideal conditions.

For the experiments we have included a Temperature and Wind factor for accuracy in our results, the effect has been included in the conclusion.

The Ear distance has been included so that you can see the furthest distance the human ear can hear in each situation, the comparison has also been included in the conclusion. Also included is measure for a microphone on its own as a control to show that the dish and microphone do actually play a role.

We improved our method of experimentation by using a Casio keyboard, instead of the human voice as last year, to obtain a constant sound.

Furthermore, the control- a simple microphone and amplifier- results have been included.

The wind direction is of relatively no importance. The wind sock, created by the group to detect relative wind speed was used continuously, and if the wind ever increased beyond a certain predetermined setting, the experiment was aborted. All the experiments were carried out six times, in order to achieve maximum average, without any unconditional factors influencing the experiment.

The experiments were conducted at midday, when atmospheric conditions had reached a dynamic temperature-air density. Thus reducing any external factors. See Factors in book 2.

These results were as we expected. The dish Delta was the best and Beta came second, Gamma and Alpha came very close to each other. Therefore the wider the radius the further the dish can be heard over an uneven terrain. The reason for the radius is because it has a larger surface area, it can receive a larger amount of sound waves, thus increasing it's ability to amplify clear, yet faint sound..

We were shocked to see that the dishes Gamma and Alpha were the best in this experiment, the reason for this is that the other two dishes are of such a radius that the interference is to great as the dishes pick up extra noise which detracts from the sound source.

Once again we are proven wrong with Gamma coming first. We believe that this is because of all the echo’s that were present. And these echo's were picked up the large surface areas, and because more of them were picked up more interference occurred, thus reducing the clarity of the dishes out put.

One of few experiments that went as we predicted, Delta being the best and Gamma being the worst. This is due to the increased surface area. This is perhaps because there was little interference from any additional noise, like echo's or people.

We were not surprised when Delta came up tops, and then Beta and so on. Once again it is the surface area that we surmise to be the factor. Similar to the field with little external interference.

Comments:

The reason that Gamma was such a success in this experiment was that it had less surface area and thus the interference was less. Once again conditions were inversely the mimic of the field.

Comments:

The field experiment showed that over flat terrain the wider circumferences received more sound and thus enhanced the quality of that sound so greater clarity could be obtained. the temperature of the water could increase or decrease the ability of the dishes resceptability, but as there are no other water sources avalible no furhter experiments could be conducted to prove this theory. Namely that is the water is cool, the air molecules will pass sound energy along more clearly, as there is no interferance from heat vibrations, so there should be an increase in sound, and if the temperature is high, then the molecules are already vibrating, producing a distortion in the sound waves.
