Kalla

The Corporate Sector was established in a far-flung and minimally explored corner of the galaxy. The Sector encompasses several hundred systems, most of them devoid of sapient life. Companies came in and bought up whole systems of space to develop as they saw fit.

Lack of competition led to an era of unparalleled profits and industrial development. Some groups and individuals had grand visions of the future of the galactic economy. These individuals joined to form the innocuously named Galactic Corporate Policy League. Few suspected it was, in fact, a cabal of plutocrats with ties to Palpatine and his New Order.

Kalla, a gem in the glittering array of systems that made up the Corporate Sector Authority, struck a deal with the devil early on in it's history. It had little in the way of natural resources..it's lakes were slightly salient, making it expensive to purify the water in any large amounts. It's rocks held little more than cheap quartz and strips of aluminum, nothing again in any amounts that would make it worthwhile to mine. It's forests were quickly stripped...the lumber sold at exorbitant amounts to whomever the CSA could find to pay their inflated prices. The early settlers of Kalla, the timber barons, built their homes out of stone..the only resource that the Authority wouldn't exploit. Upon saying that, however, from the unusual makeup of minerals in those rocks sprang natural springs whose waters had peculiar qualities. Once purified, the water had a slightly fizzy make up and a slightly sweet taste. It became a favourite drink of the Imperials stationed there...for it was not alcoholic, but had certain addictive qualities, and certain, mild, but quite obvious, hallucinogenic side effects if consumed in large amounts. Over time the beverage was further diluted and processed and outside of Kalla's universities, R'alla water became one of it's most famous exports.

Eventually, as with all it's systems, the natural resources began to run thin. Kalla had come to enjoy the wealth that it had amassed, as well as the protection that the CSA offered it...they had to come up with something that the CSA could ues...and quickly.

And then, it hit them. Kalla's relatively isolated position, the CSA's need to remain out of the main traffic lanes, would turn out to be an advantage. Men of the Empire mingled in the business sector of the Authority and as with all that aspired to greatness within the Empire, education was imperative. Yet for some, Coruscant too far away, and the costs too prohibitive. Kalla's barons set up schools...small initially, private, catering to the Imperial garrisons that dotted the outer rim. As the Empire took notice, Kalla built bigger schools, greater halls of learning, and of course, charged more and more tuition. The high tuition promised high pay, and slowly but surely the best teachers in the galaxy were lured to this rocky planet.

As the Empire took notice, so did The CSA. It became the place where they sent their children. Consequently, major fields of study include technical education, commerce, and administration with very little emphasis on the humanities. Rekkon was an instructor at the university prior to his adventures with Han Solo, and Fiolla of Lorrd attended the University of Kalla prior to taking a position in the Corporate Sector Authority. General Evir Derricote, commander of the Imperial base on Borleias, was a native of Kalla.

In time, the timber barons left, or died out, or became educators. They amassed more money through the monies brought into the University. Outside of Coruscant, Kalla was the brightest star in the galaxy when it came to education. Eventually the university branched out...including medicine and political sciences. Even in the Empire's crumbling days, Kalla was still the centre of learning.
