Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine
March 2002
Stories featured in this issue are:
- "Coelacanths" by Robert Reed.
A weird tale told from multiple viewpoints, this story looks at the
various branches of humanity in the future, ranging from the somewhat
contemporary to the barely understandable. In hindsight, the title of
the story possibly has some relationship to the tale.
- "The Pyramid of Amirah" by James Patrick Kelly.
A story that looks at the workings of a strange religion. One girl is
choosen in her hometown to become a 'pyramid girl' which involves
being entombed inside a period for an unknown amount of time. As time
passes and as her supplies run out, she begins to wonder just what is
needed to meet the needs of her religion.
- "Grandma" by Carol Emshwiller.
An interesting tale involving comic-book superheroism about an unusual
grandmother who is willing to do all that she can for her grandchild.
- "Press One for Literature" by Paul Di Filippo.
An amusing and thoughtful story about just what might happen in a
world where authors directly market their books to readers. Dinner
conversations may just never be the same again.
- "Ransom" by Albert E. Cowdrey.
A complex tale set in a future where an Asian-Chinese empire rules a
group of worlds. The children of one of the military's top men is
kidnapped and as a ransom, he is asked to perform one task that may
totally changed the history of his civilisation.
- "Presence" by Maureen F. McHugh.
A thoughtful story about a woman who is looking after her husband who
has Alzheimer's disease and the strain shows. But then she is offered
the hope of a treatment that can arrest Alzheimer's and maybe help him
to recover. But after the treatment, as he recovers, will he still be
the man she knows?
