THE DIFFERENCES OF MARRIAGE BETWEEN STATES IN MALAYSIA

In this section, we will briefly describes, the differences of marriage between states in Malaysia. Actually the differences occurred because of two different custom that are practice by the peoples. The custom are Adat Temenggung and Adat Pepatih. However for Adat Pepatih it is implemented in Negeri Sembilan only while the others states use the Adat temenggung.

Usually the common rules of malay marriage in Malaysia are:

1) Making inquiry (merisik)
2) Bethrotal (meminang)
3) Acceptance of marriage (akad nikah)
4) Sitting in states (bersanding)

Here we will describes the differences between these two customs for each steps of marriage.

1) Making inquiry

For Adat Pepatih there are two stage in making inquiry. There are "merisik" and "risik duai"while for Temenggung there is only "merisik". The differences is at the "risik duai" stage, it is for make the confirmation for the girls to accept the inquiry before the bethrotal stage. "Merisik" is only just to know more detail about the girls/woman. "Risik duai" has done more officially than the "merisik".

2) Bethrotal

In this stages both the customs practice the same rules. The man's family come to the woman's house with gifts. They come to make deal when the marriage will be held. The will set the particular date for the marriage.

3) Acceptance of marriage

Malay people, as we know are Muslim so acceptance of marriage is one of the major thing in Islam for a marriage. The is no different between these two customs. Both Adat Temenggung and Adat Pepatih do the same thing during the acceptance of marriage. They need Tok Kadi to do this job together with some witness.

4) Sitting in state

For Adat Temenngung there are only one type of sitting in state. It is common the bride will sit in the right side of the "pelamin" and the bridegroom sit on the left of the pelamin. They wear the nice and match clotes together with the accessories. For Pepatih the siting in state depends on the stage of the marriage ceremony. There are four different marriage ceremony stages.

- Olek Paras Lepan
- Olek Paras Lereng
- Olek Paras Bukit
- Olek Undang

Each of the marriage ceremony has different time duration and different accessories used by the bride and the bridegroom.
