The
Star Wars saga is a series of films created by director and producer George Lucas in 1977.
The imaginative and exciting series begins with The
Phantom Menace and continues through to the final chapter, The
Return of the Jedi. The five completed films in the series are some of the most successful
and technically astounding movies ever made.
The storyline focuses on young Anakin Skywalker, a slave boy from the
desert planet Tatooine, who is enlisted to join the Jedi Knights. Anakin is trained in
the ways of the force by Obi Wan Kenobi but finds himself caught caught in a struggle of good vs.
evil when he is seduced by the dark side of the force. As Anakin is corrupted by
the dark side, the Republic itself comes under the control of a powerful senator
called Palpatine.
Years later, Anakin's son, Luke Skywalker, joins his father's
mentor Obi Wan Kenobi on a quest to battle Palpatine's Empire and rescue a young
princess from the villainous Darth Vader. As the series continues Luke is
trained by the powerful jedi master, Yoda. Joined by Princess Leia, Han Solo and Lando Calrissian, Luke
and the rebels must fight to stop the evil empire and free the galaxy. And Luke
must come to confront Vader and Palpatine in a final battle aboard the space
station The Death Star.
Lucas melds elements of classic literature, mythology, fantasy, old-fashioned
adventure films, pulp science fiction and Akira Kurosawa films into his Star Wars
movies. The
final episode to be filmed in the series, the untitled Episode III
will be released in the summer of 2005.
