THE NEXT GENERATION

Space... the final frontier. These are the continuing voyages of the starship, Enterprise. Its continuing mission, to seek out new life forms and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before.

In the fall of 1987, Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted. In was a much anticipated show and in keeping with Star Trek, it was the first show to run entirely in syndication. This meant no NBC to mess up Gene Roddenerry's vision of the future. Just the executives at Paramount this time.

Not to mention that some of the original cast from the first show were expressing their beliefs that a new show would never make it. So, with Star Trek: The Next Generation, there was a lot of pressure to measure up. And in the early days, the writers of TNG used every possible tie in to the original show they could. The premier episode, Encounter At Farpoint, had a guest appearance from that old country doctor who was by this time 137 years old and an Admiral. His brief scene with Data certainly reminded us of those classic scenes with Spock and McCoy.

However, Star Trek: The Next Generation quickly gained its own fan base. Many of these new Star Trek fans had never even seen the original show or were turned off by its dated look. But, for many of us, it was a great addition to the Star Trek universe. Many of the same principles were found on this new show. Again, Star Trek would set out to be entertaining while dealing with many of the controversial subjects of the time.

Star Trek: The Next Generation proved that there were plenty of fans who were still fascinated to see the continuing voyages of the Enterprise. TNG was a well-written show and the cast had that special chemistry much the same as the original cast did. TNG proved itself worthy to carry on the Star Trek tradition.
