Briefing Room
Name: Kathryn Janeway
Rank: Captain
Played By: Kate Mulgrew
About the Character: Kathryn Janeway was inspired to become a Starfleet officer by her father, who died in a shuttle accident some years later. She grew up in Indiana and during her Starfleet Academy years, began a lifelong friendship with Admiral Owen Paris. Her first fiance, Lieutenant Justin Tighe, was killed along with her father, and she later became involved with Mark Hobbes Johnson. On a mission to capture a Maquis ship carrying her chief of security, Janeway and Voyager were pulled into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker. Choosing rather to allow a race called the Ocampa to have a chance at life after their Caretaker dies, Janeway destroyed the Array that had brought them to the Delta Quadrant, thus stranding Voyager and her now Maquis and Starfleet crew in the Delta Quadrant. Many attempts to shorten the crew's journey home to the Alpha Quadrant had been only moderately successful. These attempts included obtaining a powerful mass transportation device that was incompatible with Federation technology, experimenting with a quantum slipstream drive, and stealing a Borg transwarp coil. Janeway also managed to negotiate a way through Borg space as well as make peace with Species 8472. When Voyager encountered the USS Equinox, Janeway was forced to take Captain Rudolph Ransom and his crew into custody after she discovered his crew had committed mass murder as well as violate the Prime Directive on several occasions. Soon after, Commander Maxwell Burke and a portion of the Equinox crew were killed after they tried to mutiny. Currently, Voyager is continuing on its journey towards the Alpha Quadrant, and has since received a short communication from Starfleet Command.
Rank: Commander
Played by: Robert Beltran
About the Character: Chakotay is from an American Indian colony that did not embrace technology. He disobeyed his father's wishes and joined Starfleet. At Starfleet Academy, he befriended Sveta, a woman who would eventually recruit him into the Maquis. Chakotay resigned his Starfleet commission after Cardassians destroyed the American Indian colony and joined the Maquis. Because of his command experience, he was put in charge of his own cell, which later included the Cardassian spy Seska, the Starfleet spy Tuvok, as well as B'Elanna Torres and Tom Paris. For a while, he admitted to being involved with Seska, who later stole his DNA and attempted to impregnate herself with his child. The attempt failed and she was killed in a foiled attempt to take over Voyager. After being stranded in the Delta Quadrant, Chakotay and Captain Janeway decided to integrate their crews and make the journey back to Federation space together. He was promoted to the rank of Commander to replace Commander Cavit, who died on the way to the Delta Quadrant. Once, Chakotay was rescued by a colony of former Borg drones who had been severed from the Collective and became individuals. He in turn helped them to reestablish a link between all the former Borg on the planet, but returned to Voyager soon after. Chakotay's ancestry is a mystery; not much has been revealed about his tribe, but it is known that Chakotay had been on less than cordial terms with his father at the time of his death.
