In The Darkness

music by Annmarie Montade

lyrics by Jon Cooksey

Demons come from every side
(In the darkness is the light)
Out of the shadows of my life
(In the darkness is the light)

In the darkness is the light
Surrender will win the fight
This girl's walked on fire and ice
But I come out on the other side of paradise

Lorena

by Reverend H.D.L. Webster

Thanks to Poetry & Music of the War Between the States

The years creep slowly by, Lorena,
The snow is on the grass again;
The sun's low down the sky, Lorena,
The frost gleams where the flowers have been;
But the heart throbs on as warmly now,
As when the summer days were nigh;
Oh! the sun can never dip so low,
Adown affection's cloudless sky.

A hundred months have passed, Lorena,
Since last I held thy hand in mine;
And felt the pulse beat fast, Lorena --
Though mine beat faster far than thine;
A hundred months -- 'twas flowery May,
When up the hilly slope we climbed,
To watch the dying of the day,
And hear the distant church bells chime.

We loved each other then, Lorena.
More than we ever dared to tell;
And what we might have been, Lorena,
Had but our lovings prospered well --
But then -- 'tis past; the years are gone,
I'll not call up their shadowy forms;
I'll say to them, "lost years, sleep on!
Sleep on! Nor heed life's pelting storms."

The story of that past, Lorena,
Alas! I care not to repeat;
They touched some tender chords, Lorena,
They lived, but only lived to cheat.
I would not cause e'en one regret
To rankle in your bosom now --
"For if we try we may forget,"
Were words of thine long years ago.

Yes, those were words of thine, Lorena --
They are within my memory yet --
They touched some tender chords, Lorena,
Which thrill and tremble with regret.
'Twas not the woman's heart which spoke --
Thy heart was always true to me;
A duty stern and piercing broke
The tie that linked my soul to thee.

It matters little now, Lorena,
The past is in the eternal past;
Our hearts will soon lie low, Lorena,
Life's tide is ebbing out so fast.
There is a future, oh, thank God!
Of life this is so small a part --
'Tis dust to dust beneath the sod,
But there, up there, 'tis heart to heart.

from "Rebecca" (episode 109)

Rebecca

music by Annmarie Montade

lyrics by Jon Cooksey

Rebecca moves across the world
She's a sirocco on the sand
She is the Nile that flows forever
Cutting a wound across the land
She'll be your friend before you know her
She'll have your trust before it's earned
But like any nomad she will wander
Breaking the hearts of all concerned

History clouds what we remember
The one that you wanted her to be
Mystery shrouds her like an island
It is an island in the lonely sea
Oh Rebecca... Oh, Rebecca

I was thirteen going on forty
Wasting my summer on the beach
Burned on the outside and raw in the middle
"That Molly's just to hard to reach"
Rebecca moved in, yeah, she moved me
She was the best friend I'd ever had
And then one day she went away
Didn't think I'd ever feel that bad

Where did you go? Why did you lie?
Why did you leave without saying goodbye?
How about the promise that you made me?
Was it really so easy to trade me
For another town, another friend
Another beginning without end?

So many times I would have called you
If I'd had your number in my hand
You were the one I would have turned to
When things didn't go the way I'd planned
I never got the chance to tell you
Things didn't go the way I'd planned

History clouds what I remember
The one that I wanted her to be
Mystery shrouds her like an island
Does she still remember me?
Oh, my life is like a turnstile
So many strangers passing through
There have been more than I can number
But I still remember you
Oh, Rebecca... Oh, Rebecca

She Sells

music by Annmarie Montade

lyrics by Jon Cooksey

Hear that song on the radio
The one stuck in your head
It's designed to seize your mind
You're gonna sing it 'til you are dead
It isn't by your favorite band
It's by a girl you'll never know
But the next time you go shopping
She'll tell you where to go

She sells condos by the seashore (she sells)
She sells machines to wax the kitchen floor (she sells)
She sells to get a slice of the big pie
But in the end she sells her soul
Because she knows that's what they want to buy

She gave up chasing that hit single
Why should she work so hard?
When she can write some catchy jingle and
Buy a house with a big backyard
The suits fill up her fan club
The boardroom is her gig
Her music plays ten times a day
She must be really big

New Math

music by Annmarie Montade

lyrics by Jon Cooksey

thanks to Tyler for transcribing second verse

Dear party of the first part, it’s time to draw the line.
It’s time to make the list and divide up the broken heart.
Dear mother of my daughter, dear father of my son,
It’s time to face the problem and find the proper dissolution.

It’s the new math. It’s the new math.
We didn’t add up so now we’ve got to divide (decide?).
It’s the new math. It’s the new math.
Don’t you think it’s strange how we multiply and divide.

Get a piece of chalk
Put it on the blackboard
Husband minus wife
Sorry you had to learn to so young
This man is real life

This is the new math
This is the new math
We didn't so add up so now we've got to decide
This is the new math
This is the new math
Gonna think it's a shame cause we multiply and divide

Origami

music by Annmarie Montade

lyrics by Jon Cooksey

thanks to Tyler for transcribing

These nights I just can't sleep
These walls are paper thin
I just can't take the heat
Something's trying to get in

Hit me, hit me, hit me, hit me

I ain't obeying no more
The way I'm bound to break
Took me down to my car
That's all that I can take

I've been folding myself
Yeah
I really sold myself
With no escape
I've been folding myself
In little shapes
Trying to please you, trying to appease you
And ended up with ten thousand me's

When you made me say I was ice
Say you were the warmth to thaw me
Now I'm too broke to pay that price
The secret to love
The secret to love is not origami

I've been so many shapes
Since the day that I was born
From ugly duckling to a swan
And now a unicorn

I've been folding myself
Yeah
I really sold myself
With no escape
I've been folding myself
In little shapes
Trying to compare, trying to ensnare you
Finally there was no one there

When you made me say I was ice
Say you were the warmth to thaw me
Now I'm too broke to pay that price
The secret to love
The secret to love is not origami
No, no, no

Oh how I miss the exchange
Of electricity
And now it feels so strange
To expose the real me

Ain't gonna fold myself
Yeah
Just wanna behold myself
Well, I really mean it
I know I sold myself
Ain't gonna fold myself
Yeah
The secret to love
The secret to love
The secret to love is not origami
