The Ark and the Fighters were built in response to the rising threat of the Xurians. When it was seen that the five Starfighters were insufficient to handle this task, the Fighters were created and The Ark designed to house them. Two "Arks" are in existence right now, both with a full complement of 144 fighters. Another was slated for creation, but the immense cost of production has halted this project until it is deemed absolutely necessary. However, roughly half of the Fighters it was supposed to carry were created prior to the building project's cancellation, and these are used as back-ups or replacements for those damaged or lost in battle.
