David Lister is a slobby guy with weird hair and an unhealthy diet. He takes a job on the mining ship Red Dwarf to to save up money to buy himself a little farm on Fiji, where he can get a sheep and a cow, and breed horses. Lister is bunked with his shift supervisor Arnold Rimmer. It's safe to say they don't like each other much.
In violation of all quarantine-regulations Lister brings his pregnant cat, Frankenstein, aboard, this earns him a place in stasis for the rest of the trip to Earth.
While Lister is protected in stasis, the ship's drive plant explodes. The only survivor is Frankenstein.
Three million years pass by, Lister's cat evolves humanoid descendants, "Felis Sapiens". Red Dwarf's computer, Holly, spends his time reading every book ever written, and then finally decides it's safe to let Lister out.
Now he's lost in space with the hologram of Rimmer (generated by Holly), a guy he don't like at all, Cat, the last of the Felis Sapiens-race, Holly, the senile computer who cant quite decide witch sex he/she is and the smart, conscience-stricken, domestic mechanoid, Kryten.
