Past and Present

OVERVIEW:

The Dominion, with the hundreds of races belonging to it, was created solely for the Changelings and by the Changelings, so it's only logical that they would have the absolute rule. If they decide to do something, it gets done, otherwise, Jem'Hadar will come for a visit. The administrative link between the Changelings and the membership worlds are the Vorta. Most people when they think of Dominion members, they think of people with no freedom. Actually, it is quite the opposite. Dominion members can act mostly independently, as long as they follow certain guidelines, of course. A different chapter are of course the Jem'Hadar, who basically have no personal freedom at all. Bred for combat, they actually don't know anything else, as it was implanted into their genetic makeup. A growing dissatisfaction among Jem'Hadar is the natural outcome. Although Jem'Hadar are extremly loyal to the Founders, most Jem'hadar dislike their Vorta supervisors. There have even been a few occations where Jem'Hadar have turned on their Vorta but things have started to change. The Vorta treat Jem'Hadar with respect and have realized that Jem'Hadar are as capable as any vorta. The Jem'Hadar have responded with the same respect.

DOMINION HISTORY:

Many years ago the Changelings were very peaceful explorers; they roamed the stars, searching out other races so that they could add to their knowledge of the galaxy. However, Changelings where met with distrust and hatred by non-Changelings. Because the Changelings were feared of their metamorphic abilities, many were hunted, beaten and killed. The "Solids" gave them the name "Changelings", and they meant it as an insult; but in defiance, the Changelings made that their own name. The Changelings eventually withdrew and settled on at least two isolated planets. The first one was Omaria, a class M planet in the Omarian Nebula. The second planet is an unknown planet (name-location wise), and much more Changelings seem to live there. During their isolation, the Changelings did not refrain from exploring other cultures; they sent out 100 infants to gain knowledge during their voyages, with the genetically implanted urge to return to Omaria. Odo was the first to return in 2371 due to the Wormhole. Odo, even though he is a Changeling, has turned his back on his race due to their unreasonable thinking and expansionistic attitudes.

At least 2000 years ago, the Founders started to build the Dominion, setting upon themselves "the task of imposing order on a chaotic universe". The Dominion continuously expanded, eventually including people like the Vorta and the Karemma, using the Jem'Hadar to maintain peace. The Dominion soon after discovered the wormhole.
