PEAC (Parrot Education and Adoption Center) is a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to educating current and potential bird owners on the care of pet birds. Unwanted or found parrots are accepted at Parrot Education & Adoption Center and in turn are adopted to qualified applicants. We have been members of the Pittsburgh Chapter of PEAC since 2001. They have a lovely website (which I just happen to maintain). You may even see a bird you recognize.
In early 2002, we took in a couple PEAC foster birds, two Nanday Conures
They were so cute! They were so LOUD! After they moved on to separate foster homes, we found out that individually these conures were very, very sweet and not nearly so incessantly noisy.
Meanwhile, we took in Pickles, an Indian Ringneck Parakeet
Pickles is a happy, healthy little bird, who just happens to be afraid of hands. So we're working on that.
Our latest addition is Petey, a yellow-collar macaw
Petey is an older bird, at least 17 years old. He started out with a pretty good life, but in the last year things got very stressful. That's why his back looks bare in the first picture--he has plucked all the feathers off his back. With some love, attention, a steady schedule and a nutritous diet, we expect Petey to be back in fine feather one day soon.
