A study of admiration

Regarding which people and what creatures have influenced me over the years, I have a few things to tell. As I have said, I have existed for nearly 190 years. Although I do know of a few entities that walked the Earth when Rome was but an inkling of a thought in the minds of men and vampires, 190 is quite respectable. You learn a lot in that many years.
However, the foremost shaper of my mind must be a human being. You may have read about Nigel Mayfair on my family page; if not, please do. Admittedly, there is not much information regarding him as person there. But that is somewhat intentional as it is rather the concept of him that has shaped me into what I am today.
He made me question the notion of immortality. His death made me aware of that what I do and what we Kindred do, matter. We affect humans. Our actions, however benevolent in mind and purpose, always draw the life blood from humans, whether metaphorically or literally.

There are other beings that I have been influenced by as well. Naturally, my dear friends, Charles, Sean and Rudolph are among them. We have done some wondrous and fantastic things together and I would not be the same without them. Thanks guys!

Among the minor entities I wish to mention, there is a certain Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. Although his writing might seem somewhat dated in these days, his story, Carmilla , must be mentioned. Some of you might have wondered where my somewhat strange surname originates, as I was clearly born a Compton. Look no further. Other such influences include Madelyn Beckett, blessed be her soul, Wallis Mayfair, blessed be his, Queen Boadicea and Michael Rover. They have all taught me things about myself that I would not have found without them. I also find that I have learnt a few things from the suffrage movement, Susan Anthony and Gloria Steinem, not as a "woman", perhaps, but rather as an oppressor. What Kindred do to the human populace far exceeds the horrors committed by men towards women.

I also have a certain affection for the Bronte-sisters and their writing, or at least, Emily's. Had I but known about you and paid more attention to human affairs, your life might have ended differently. Your writing still inspires me though. Wuthering Heights was her only novel.
Some few years back, there appeared a musical interpretation of Emily's masterpiece. Even though I must admit being somewhat biased regarding the music of this century, I can readily agree that the works of Kate Bush has a certain special quality. Her rendering of Wuthering Height is very impressive and she is a very special person to me. Someday perhaps...

Lastly, I must mention Jennifer. She was my maid back in the days of my living in The Compton Halls after my 60 year sojourn to York. This was in 1890 and onwards. She was embraced in 1895. During the following forty odd years or so, we were inseparable. Then, just after the second World War, she fell in love with a mortal. The tragedy ended three years later, when she could not hide her secret from him anymore. In a small hotel room in the south west of London, Gerald Smith shot himself with his service gun. Jennifer left me and the British Isles shortly afterwards. I have not seen her since. If you are reading this, Jennifer, please contact me. I have no wish to control your life by commanding you to come. But I still wish to see you again. If but for a moment.

This has been a somewhat short walk into the depths of my mind. I hope you have learned something.
