Buffy the Vampire Slayer
"Let me introduce myself. I'm Buffy, and you're - history!"

It wasn't Buffy's slaying that annoyed the school authorities so much as her habit of posing with her friends (and Cordelia) in the middle of the halls, thus denyiing anyone any through access   Oh stop sneering at the back. Yes, I happen to enjoy watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Why? Because it's a good show. Because it has two of my favourite subjects in it - vampires and high school being hell. Because it has a strong female lead, good supporting cast (including two more strong female characters), snappy dialogue, good special effects, and episodes that range from the passable to the breath-taking. And it is genuinely scary in place. After all, what other show has an episode where possessed students end up eating the principle?

You want more? How about the fact that the show tries to do things that other major American fantasy/sci-fi/horror shows wouldn't dream of doing? Like having the characters at each other's throats on occasion (and I don't just mean for one episode that then ends fluffily, I mean that stretch throughout several and continue to resonate), or indulging in endings that are far from happy (especially with Season 2 ending by having Buffy sending her vampire boyfriend to Hell because it's the only way to save the world).   Honestly, what *are* those publicity people on?! 'Ooh, we've got to do some publicity shots for Buffy - I know, let's put the three leads in a red room dressed all in red lycra and wearing make-up and poses that no normal human being would indulge in unless they were on heroin. Yeah, *that'll* sell the show!" Sheesh!

Do all American teenagers have teeth this perfect? Or hair that big? I think not! And since we're on the subject of teenagers, don't you think that they look just a little bit, well, old to be in highschool?...   OK, I'll admit that Season 3 was decidedly rough in places. But that's to be expected - The X Files had a poor third season, as did Deep Space 9. Besides, the Season 2 cliffhanger would have been pretty hard to top and the writers did sort of try. Anyway, whatever flaws the show is developing are made up for my by the fans; a great group of individuals with some really interesting takes on life and unusual ways of getting what they want out of the show. Like fan fiction, which can be found in, well, my Book of Fan Fiction elsewhere on the site.
