Stan and Kai travel to London for a druidic festival believing that this magical event can bring Xev back to life. Unfortunately they find themselves up against Oberon, the king of the fairies, who wants a new wife to replace Titania.
Although we've come to expect this a little by now, the bringing back of Xev is pretty easily and quickly taken care of, when it's possible more mileage could have been got out of the situation. That said, the episode certainly wouldn't work without her, although it's Stan who has the bulk of the material in the end.
Loosely based on A Midsummer Night's Dream, this episode is one of the oddest seen for a while, with talking and singing trees, Titania being a bearded man in a dress (well, Oberon is king of the fairies) and Stan almost getting married. Taking its usual open approach to sexuality, once more we have a character who doesn't care who he's married to as long as it's not Titania and Stan seems more than happy to go along with the marriage as long as there's no funny business.
It's somehow a little pacier than we usually get from LEXX, which is of course a good thing, and the use of Row Row Row Your Boat as the song the trees sing (with new words) works very well, Michael McManus again getting a chance to use his rather fine singing voice. The last time sentient trees turned up in Sci-Fi was on an appalling attempt on Doctor Who, but thankfully LEXX's unusual set-up makes it seem perfectly normal, and the trees are actually rather well animated.
It's funny, it's silly, it's just really good fun and I like that in an episode. Hugely enjoyable.
