The Engineering students of Mumbai mailing list
Contents:
What is this list?
How do I subscribe (join)?
How do I send a message to the list (post)?
How do I unsubscribe (leave)?
How do I change the email address I'm using?
How do I change settings?
I don't have a password! I lost it!
What is and is not allowed on the list?
I have a problem! Whom do I contact?
I started this for keeping Engineering students in Mumbai in contact with
each other for the purpose of sharing information related to engineering,
college, the university, etc. For example, we can use this to send exam
time-tables quickly to everyone.
To send a message to the list, email
engrs@onelist.com
(Call it Bombay or Mumbai, it's the same city!)
(Please use an email address from which you can send emails!)
Subscribe to
Engineers at Mumbai via the WWW.
Or send a blank email to

This is known as the list address
You can do this in three ways.

You can send a blank email to

You need to log into the ONEList system.
Once you are in the member centre, you can manage all your options, including
changing your email address, unsubscribing, and setting the digest and
no-mail options.

Go to http://www.onelist.com/,
enter the email address under which you're registered, any random
password, and click
the "Member Center" link. The password probably won't be accepted,
in which case click the link which will have your password emailed
to you. Then use this password.
- Any college related questions or discussion is allowed. Also, anything
current may be discussed in a calm and professional manner. Any thread that
degenerates into flaming will be stopped.
- Jokes (especially those long forwards with 90% header and 10% stale P.J.),
flames, rants, and chain letters are highly discouraged. There are
other lists for humour.
- Virus warnings and chain letters must NOT be sent
to the lists. They should be sent to jam@comports.com for approval.
- Please keep the language clean, some people may be offended.
- Attachments are not allowed, as is HTML-ised email.
Attachments, especially unnecessary ones, tend to clog up email accounts.
(The ONEList system restricts attachments to about 500kb, but even this
is too big for some heavy-traffic mailboxes.)
If there is any non-text matter you wish to share, please put it on the web
and email a link to the list.
Many of us are using shell accounts and cannot read HTML-ised mail.
- I can, will, and do screen anyone who does not behave. Screening
will result
in emails from a screened person being delayed or not being delivered at all.
Sorry, but there is nothing else I can do. You will get one warning.
Note that some of the above points are guidelines rather than strict rules,
and hence will be less heavily enforced.
- The intention is to reduce the level of
noise/unnecessary chatter on the lists as much as possible. This should
enable the list to stay on topic. It will also allow people to follow
important college-related discussions (and anything else that is
important to us as students; see the first point).
Please do not be frightened by the rules.
They are there to protect you as well as the list.
The rules have nothing to do with freedom of expression and
everything to do with good list manners and common sense.
Here are a couple of guidelines:
- Caps Lock: Be careful that you never leave the CAPS lock key on when
composing a message to the list which will result in your whole message
being sent in capitals. THIS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING, and is not good
netiquette.
- Remember that if you hit reply when replying to a list message your
response will be sent to the whole list. If you wish to send a private
response you will need to cut and paste the required email address into the
'to field' of your message and remove the list's email address.
- Always read your message through at least once before sending it to make
sure it is as you intended, including correctly addressed.
- Please make an effort to delete all unnecessary text, especially headers,
footers, and signature lines from the message you are replying to. Edit
quotations carefully, only quote enough to provide an adequate reminder of
what is being discussed but remember that under quoting is as bad as over
quoting. Please don't just hit reply then add your response at the top
and hit send.
- Try to follow general netiquette :)
