Sue was abandoned as a child and never knew her parents. Naturally, the state placed her into a state orphanage. The head nurse gave her the name of Sue Rebecca Berc. Life was difficult in the home. Most of the kids that went into its care never left alive. It was a combination of luck, beauty, and intelligence that let her escape. She excelled in the corporate welfare schools and managed to attract attention to herself by brains and body.

There were two people who shaped her life. The first was a teacher, Mrs. Perry. She was the one that encouraged her to find her place in the world. It was Mrs. Perry who gave Sue her first taste of higher science and math. She never would have pursued success and knowledge with such vigor if it hadn't been for that tall woman at the front of her fifth grade class. The second was the head of the orphanage, a Mr. Blask. He was a huge, sadistic man. Many of his wards died by falling down stairs or in the shower. He especially liked having girls under his watchful eye. He kept a very close, personal eye on Sue from age ten to sixteen. He died during a private counseling session with her. It came as quite a shock to many of his colleagues. No one even suspected that he used narcotics, but he died of a massive overdose. Blask taught her how to control others, how to freeze her heart, and how to obey. The scars are still with her. The paranoia, the need for a strong hand, the need for escape, and her choice in men can all be traced back to him.

Once in the work force, she quickly became attached to Arasaka. She began studying corporate law to speed her climb up the ladder, and it worked beautifully. She rose quickly; after only five years, she was a highly respected member of their 'education' program. It was here that she worked on thought reform, brain washing, and mood alteration. Her ideas were solid and very effective. Soon, she was meeting with other section heads to discuss strategy. It was there that she met David H. Ray. The quickly passed from acquaintances, to lovers. When she became pregnant, she took maternity leave. During her leave, she made arrangements with a friend of David's, named Andrew R. Aldrich, to set aside money for her children's future. Using her legal knowledge and Andrew's accounting, she had soon set aside a sizable amount in a dummy corporation called CyberTectronic Inc. After the children were born, she began to work at home where she could always watch over her children. Terrified of them going through her experiences, she kept them out of public, private, and corporate school. Soon David joined her and they raised their children away from the vicious world. Occasionally, she would get called into the office, but they mostly let her work in peace.

When the triplets came down with the plague, David told her to keep it quiet. She obeyed. When all three survived, he decided that they were going to leave Arasaka. Sue convinced their supervisors (she hopes) that they were going to search for a place to keep their children safe from the menace. They received a large 'good will' gift before leaving. Instead of leaving, David set up the Church of the Silver Savior. She stayed with him. Sue's main jobs are to keep CyberTectronic Inc. running as a front for the church; to maintain all the papers, contracts, and deeds; and to re-educate prospective angels and members.

In person, she is a stunning redhead with deep green eyes. Her clothing leans towards simple black outfits. Small and petite, she prefers to use her wits to fists. Towards her children, she is alternately supportive and loving as well as denigrating and cold. She expects obedience out of everyone, except males larger than herself. For example, she obeys David without hesitation. With others, she is constantly studying and probing them. If anyone asks that she study herself or her life, she brushes them off with harsh words or may physically attack them. On the whole, she is a hot and cold running manipulator who needs someone to control her.
