Mary Holmes was born to high society. Her father was a vice president in Dobson foods, a significant competitor to Biotechnicia in food services. Her mother was a professional hostess and entertained wonderfully. Her brother was going to become a medical researcher, but he died in a yachting accident. From her first breath, her parents pampered her and prepared her to take her place as a superior among equals. Her mother and father drilled her in organization, etiquette, and problem solving. Unfortunately, before she was ten, everything changed.
On December 10, the federal government received tips that led to her father's arrest for insider trading and income tax evasion. He claims that it was a setup, but no evidence of a frame has ever been uncovered. His incarceration threw the family
into turmoil. In order to pay for his fines, back taxes, and other costs, they spent all of their money and sold most of their possessions. Fortunately, her mother was quick to pick up the slack and took a job as an event organizer. She set up the parties and meetings for people she used to call friends. While the pay was quite good, it just was not in the same bracket. As her personal income fell, Mary turned to light thievery and con games to improve her standing. Eventually, she found a group where she could blend in without high-class clothes, yet acquire information, skills, and techniques that she could use to put her back into comfort, the ArcoRunners. Her superior attitude and egotistical nature gave her the nickname the Mistress. Her scheming became particularly extreme three months ago, although no one knew out why. As it turns out, she had gone through the change and her mother threw her out of the house for bringing disgrace to the family. Shortly after the forced eviction, Mary 'left town'. In reality, she just left for greener pastures, with the Disavowed.
Both the Mad Hatter and Bonepart knew of Mary. Her family's
downfall and subsequent success in the Arcorunners gave her a large shadow in the yogang system. Naturally, both kept an eye on her. After the Disavowed was formed, both wanted her on their side. Some subtle influence and negotiation and they had a Quartermaster. The Mistress's unflappable and determined nature helped her to form an efficient dissemination system for the group. Even the Mad Hatter was amazed by the seemingly effortless fashion that she handles the chaotic river of people, things, and information that go through her. Naturally, Bonepart keeps a close eye on her work to prevent too much 'lost inventory'. For his part, Bonepart ensures that she lives in relative comfort and that certain recordings of late night thefts do not fall into the hands of the police.
The Mistress truly does suit her handle. She is regal in both appearance and manner. She keeps her thick black hair in an austere bun, while her sharp features cut the air in front of brilliantly deep grey eyes. Now that she no longer has to crawl about the arcology, she has returned to the conservative, high quality clothes befitting her birth. Unlike most Disavowed, she has no animosity towards her former yogang. Instead, she holds GoldenKids, GlitterKids, Vidiots, Datahounds, and Rads responsible for her family's fall. She tries to avoid contact with the lower classes and remains close with both the Mad Hatter and Bonepart (although some think his blackmail may play a part
in her congeniality). Recently, people have seen her in the company of two members usually outside her circle. The first is understandable, Kong, the Treasurer and Secretary of the Disavowed. They seem to have found a common ground in their need for comfort and control; they even share the
same hideout. The other is more unusual, an Ex-Trog named The Thing. No one knows why, but she has been seen in his company repeatedly. She even chose him to be her deputy. Some think he is her lackey; others his lover, but no one is sure. One must treat The Mistress with care and respect; she does not take insults lightly, and she has a creative sense
of justice.
