PLAYERS

On this page you will find information on SS Jailbreak as it pertains to the player's role in the game and how the game is to be played. Even if you know how jailbreak works & all, you may want to find the specifics of this mod. This mod works a little different from Q2 and traditional jailbreak mods in that those mods require special client-side code and maps. This mod requires only a server to play the mod, and nothing more from the client save a good understanding of how the game plays and works.

Obviously, Quake 3: Arena, as well as SS Jailbreak was designed for you, not the server admins, coders like me, or modelers, skinners, etc. Developers as well as sysops, however, are your route to playing the game, and we need YOUR input if we are to keep things going for YOU.

WHAT YOU NEED

WHAT IS JAILBREAK?

I don't know if any of you played Jailbreak when you were children, but I know I did. It's a little game where everyone goes running around tagging people, sending them to "jail"...some place, probably a tree, where these captives had to stay. If one of the other team invaded the base and reached the jail, he could tag captives of his team into freedom. A team would win if the entire other team was captured.

The idea of Q3: Jailbreak is similar to this age-old game. In Q3 jailbreak, however, you send someone to your jail by killing them in game. When you go to jail, you are held in a similar fashion within the radius of a point. You are rescued in the same manner by a member of your team.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO PLAY?

A computer with Quake 3:Arena installed. NOTHING ELSE. As the name implies, Q3: SS JB is a server-side game. This means that all the files necessary to play are contained on the servers you play on. The maps that are used are the same regular maps of Q3A, as are all the models, skins, etc. If you play Q3A on your computer, you can play Q3:SSJB too!

A GOOD SERVER

To say that all you need is Q3A simplifies the situation rather dramatically. As any multiplayer game, gracious servers and administrators are necessary to play. If you want to play Q3:SSJB online, you will need to find a server. I cannot truly verify that any good servers will exist for Q3:SSJB, but there may be some...so find 'em!

HOW TO PLAY

GOING TO JAIL

The name of the game is Jailbreak, and the first part of that is "jail." Basically, this means that when you die, you go to jail. Hopefully, one of your teammies will rescue you from the jail, but maybe not. You will be respawned in jail, where you may notice other members of your team. You will be given an empty machinegun, and nothing else.

WHILE IN JAIL

While in jail, you cannot pickup any items, including the enemy flag. Also, you cannot be harmed in any way except by trying to escape from jail. You are held in jail by an invisible "force field" 400 units in radius from the center of the jail. The center will likely be denoted by the enemy flag, but it may not be. If you walk more than 300 units from the center, you will be continuously warned of your distance so that you can move back to the center. If you step outside the 400 unit radius, you will be killed and a frag will be deducted from your score.

ESCAPING FROM JAIL

In jail, you are freed by a teammate (who is not in jail) making the "tag" by coming into contact with you. When this occurs, you will instantly be restored ammo in your machinegun and a gauntlet, and no longer be restricted from picking up items (including the enemy flag) or by the 400 unit "force field." Your teammate who frees you gets a frag for making the tag, and when you are free you can proceed to free other teammates in the jail and score frags for yourself as well. Each prisoner is freed individually. If the group of prisoners form a line of contact, then a single teammate can free the whole group without wasting time, and each member gets a single frag.

You can also be freed by escaping from the "force field." Mathematically, this occurs on a 1 in 20 chance, so it may not be worth it to try to free yourself. If you do, you pick up a frag for it and then can continue to free your other teammates in jail. If 1 in 20 is too rare for everyone, the source is easily changed to something larger, but I suspect that an easy chance of escape might destroy the whole point of jailbreak.

JAILBREAK & CTF

You may notice in some cases that capture the flag and jailbreak are paired together in a single game. Technically, jailbreak can be combined with any gametype, although I cannot personally vouch for Obelisk or Harvester. The jails in jailbreak will typically be located at the flags, although the server can choose separate locations for the jails and flags in CTF maps. If this is the case, while in jail you will need to pay attention to the >300 unit warning so that you can remain within the bounds of the jail.

You may also notice that CTF can be played in non-CTF maps. It may take a few minutes of getting used to the jail locations, but they are specified by the server. If Jailbreak and CTF are used together in this way, the flags must be located with the jails.

I NEED YOUR INPUT

Let me reiterate: SSJB, as any other game, was designed for the YOU, the player. It was designed, though, not by you the player but by coders, mappers, skinners, modelers, sound engineers, and other people. After all, we will develop a game we like, something that you may not like. If we are supposed to please you (our aim), we need YOU to tell us what WE need to do to make things betters and what we are screwing up. If it is gay, then tell us! If you like it, tells us! Either way, we need to know what YOU want. Contact me.

The second and more important reason that I need your contact is that this mod is in the beta stages. Sure, the server sysops can contact me, but how do they know if something's messed up or there is a bug? If you do see, hear, feel, taste or smell something that you think is wrong, please contact me.
