Written Role-Playing
The name "Written Role-Play", also known by a half a dozen other names,
has probably been around for a long while and was probably an unofficial
branch of role-playing. The first time I encountered it was on *Prodigy's
BBSes.
What is WRP?
Written Role-Playing is role-playing, written. (Doh!) <g>
There are no dice, cards, boards, and whatnot. All you have is
your imagination, your writing skills and a little bit of cooperation
from other writers/players. You begin by writing a new character;
and ta-da!, you can now play this character. The objective of
the "game" is to interact with other characters and from there
produce a storyline (or storylines).
Some other answers..
The Quill WRP FAQ will have
most of the answers regarding WRP. Come on and join the fun! :) Or you can
go to the Red Dragon's Inn;
though its FAQ is geared towards the activities going on in the newsgroup,
it shows how this "written role-playing" business is carried out.

Quill WRP Mailing List
All wrp-ing is done through a mailing list that I maintain.
We have three genres, Fantasy, Modern and Murder & Mystery, all on-going
here. Though the WRP is under Quill, we do still have some non-Quill
members participating; and you're welcomed to join us.
To join, send a message to:
listserv@maelstrom.stjohns.edu
with the message: subscribe quillwrp (your_full_name)
Most participants, however, do still fit the Quill criteria, being of
under 24 years old. Feel free to join the
alt.dragons-inn
newsgroup--role-playing in a fantasy environment.
Character Database
I have put up a page for this, but I have not had the time to put
all the character descriptions in, yet. Just a list of what characters
I've created to the Quill WRPs. I'll work on it soon, and I've
also put up another character database for the Avress Tower
characters.
Quill WRP Archives
I was trying to compile all of the posts conducted on the Quill WRPs
in a nicely readable format. But the list has grown so much that I can
barely keep up, much less archive! So, I've left the job to a more reliable
entity--the server's automated archiver. Don't you just love technology?
