Schematic Drawing
of Moroccan Necklace
The necklace is hung around the horse's neck. Often it is connected to the neck part of the bridle by help of a cord.
In the French-speaking parts of Maghreb, it is also called "Porte-Amulette". This indication explains one of its purposes: normally, the tassel at the lower end contains an amulet to protect the horse and its rider from harm and evil charms.
Another purpose is less mysterious: the side wings contain four metal plates, which protect the horse's carotid arteries in battle.
Like all the other parts of the equipment, the necklace is richly embroided.
