17th-19th Century Gold Extraction Techniques
This is Dona Maria Bárbara showing how the slaves extracted gold from the ore which they removed from the mine. These stone relics from the 17th century were found recently in a small field directly above her house. Water ran down the face of the stone while the slaves rubbed and scrapped the gold ore across the artifact. The gold was collected in a bowl at the bottom of the stone. The ruins of Chico Rei´s home and the "Cenzala" or slave quarters were recently found together adjacent to the mine. You can see examples of the ore, speckled with gold, in the reception area prior to entering the mine.
