I strive to make it easy for students to do their best work in my classes and to prepare them to learn for themselves in their future. I remind the students that "Commencement" means "Beginning."


Courses at MSU

ENG 102: Composition and Research - view syllabus

This course includes the writing of essays, both on general topics and literature. Students also write a research paper on the topic of their choice.


Humanities 211: Western Humanities Tradition: Continuity

This course includes the studying of the literature and philosophy of the classical, medieval, Renaissance, Enlightenment periods, as well as the writing of essays and examinations.


Humanities 212: Humanities in the Modern World: Diversity - view syllabus

This course includes the studying of the literature and philosophy from the Romantic period to the present, as well as the writing of essays and examinations.


ENG 213: Film and Literature - view syllabus

In this course, which I have offered on a regular basis since 1978, I teach multiple versions of the same basic story--three novels, play adaptations of those novels, and one or two movie versions.
