They're still shuffling my schedule at the hospital, but it's working out. From today through Saturday I actually work normal-person hours, which means getting home before dark and maybe some much-needed time on Kuhio Beach. I think I'll make this a short one.

It's sign-waving season again, with local elections about two months away. Yay. Roadside entertainment for all. It's funny how you never hear how accident rates go up during an election year.

Now that should be a platform: "Vote for me and I won't startle you while you're driving."

On my way home, through a brief side-trip to Foodland and the bank, I think there were at most three intersections without at least one squinting but smiling person standing behind a "Vote for {x} in '96!" sign, waving madly.

I honked and made shaka for one small pack of Frank Fasi supporters on Kapi`olani Boulevard. Since I was once one of those maligned grinners-and-wavers (a very long story) myself, I felt bad for them. Now Fasi might be old, and he's against same-sex marriage, but he's got serious guts... and he hates Jeremy Harris (who sucks) more than I do.

All told, Honolulu isn't a very big town. For state rep seats, a lot of the poor darlings are "campaigning" all by themselves. If you see someone on the corner with a sign that says "We want George Axlotl Bong for District 59 Representative," chances are that sunburnt supporter is George.

Keeping with the theme... I saw two chuckle-worthy signs in town -- both on the same building across Ala Moana. One was a neon "COCKTAILS" sign on a strip club that was half burnt out, so it said only "TAILS." Betcha business picked up since it broke (and thank god it didn't break the other way).

The other was for a classy furniture company (which happened to be under a computer repair store). The lowercase 't' in the word "interior" was bent at the top, so it looked like it said "Inferior Systems."

And ya know, "Sears" becomes "ears" now and then at Pearlridge.

I came up with a few theories about my dream, but I think it's more significant that I could recall it after waking up. I always have strange, clear dreams, but for the last three months or so I couldn't hang on to them at all.

If anything, I think part of me is just trying to say, "You like Derek. Deal with it." I guess maybe I do.

Last but not least, Jen just called (seconds ago, even) and said she was given control of the country music section at Tower again. She has also gotten it into her head that she's going to make me a tape of country music for my birthday.

Although I will probably get excommunicated from the Church of Cool People for admitting this, I can stand some country music. Ever since Jen played for me the original versions of "I Swear" and "I Will Always Love You" (which only later became nauseating Top-40 hit covers by talentless pop "artists"), I've developed a little respect for those big-hat wearing crooners.

Besides, k. d. lang has definite country flavor, and she's one of my favorite musicians.
