One Possible Birkholz Coat of Arms

The Coat of Arms used for this web page was found in Siebmacher's Wappenbuch by Halbert's Family Heritage. It is one possible Birkholz Coat of Arms. It is described as, "red, three pointed silver hats placed two over one, each with three black rooster feathers coming out of the point....A bearded man, clothed in red, wearing a pointed red hat with silver brim, issuing from the point are three black rooster feathers."

The color red represents fortitude and creative power.

Our History Profile

The surname Birkholz is German in origin. It means "birch wood" or "one who lived by a birch wood". This meaning has been confirmed through genealogy books and people with Birkholz ancestry.

Currently, the author of this web site does not know where in Germany our surname originated. The country of Germany does have the highest population of Birkholzes in the world.

During the 1600's and 1700's, life in Germany was hard. Religious persecution, the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and the Napoleonic Wars (1804-1815) had devastated parts of Europe, including Germany. The German people were plagued by hunger, diseases and poverty. Some parts of Germany had become overpopulated. Jobs and land for farming to make a living were hard to find. This caused many Germans to be depressed and discouraged.

During the 1600's, 1700's and 1800's, other countries were welcoming German immigrants. For example, Russia encouraged Germans to come colonize it's vast empty regions. America also had plenty of land open for settlement. Such countries were opening their doors at just the right time. Thousands of Germans, looking for a better life, immigrated to them. Many of our ancestors were among them.

Birkholz families are now found throughout the world, primarily in Europe and North America.

Surname Variations

There appears to be several variations of the Birkholz name. Some of them date back centuries, to Germany. Others may be relatively new spellings. U.S. immigration officials and Federal Census takers sometimes spelled a name the way they thought it sounded, whether it was the correct spelling or not.

Some of these surnames are variations of the Birkholz name. Others are possible variations--and variations of variations--which have been found mingled with lists of Birkholzes. If you can tell us more about one of these surnames, please e-mail the information.
