The pueblo is where some Native Americans live. For a few dollars you can look around and take pictures of their dwellings.
In New Mexico, the Indians have many special privileges - the right to trade in certain places, the right to open casinos on their land. I suppose there is a degree of atonement here for the sins of the past. I even heard the Indians refered to as "living history". I was being sold a very respectful view of these people. Unfortunately I didn't buy it.
Wandering round the pueblo I got the feeling that the people living there were being ghetto-ized through supposed positive discrimination. Giving these people the position of being "living history", putting them up on a pedestal, still means they are being put in their place. Maybe I'm wrong on all this, but I'm not sure the people of New Mexico have come to terms with the past or created a healthy multi-cultural society that can move into the future.
This is just a shot from the car as we were driving back.
