Question:
Why don't cats like to swim?
The Answer:
It's commonly believed that cats are afraid of getting wet,
but the truth is that cats don't like to swim in water for
the same reason that people don't like to swim in pudding.
It may be fun, but it's usually not worth the effort of
cleaning up afterwards.
Cats like being tidy almost as much as they enjoy sleeping.
Getting wet runs counter to both of these, as our feline
friends would have to cut into their naptime to dry and
clean themselves after a dip in the pool. Most cats choose
to save the energy by staying dry. You might be just as
hesitant about mussing your hair if your primary grooming
tool was your tongue.

A note to the quibbler.
As feline fanciers can attest, not all cats are averse to
water. Larger cats like jaguars and tigers have been known
to take the plunge, and some domesticated cats are reported
to enjoy joining their owners in the shower or bath.
