How to get one

There are many places you can go to get a webpage. I prefer Geocities, simply because of easier uploading, more space, and neat neighborhoods, which allows you to focus your site more easily.

However, before you can get a space for a webpage, you need an email account to which Geocities can send your password. If you do not already have one of your own, (I do not recommend sharing an account if you are going to have a page registered under it), you can go to Hotmail and get one.

Hotmail is free and easy. To get an account go to Hotmail and click on the button that says, "Sign up here." This will take you to the registration form. At the bottom, click on the button that reads "I accept these…etc". This will take you to a more involved application. Fill out all the fields (interests are optional), and press submit. Sometimes your preferred login name is already taken, so you have to try others. Don't give up, and be creative if you want.

After you have your email, go to Geocities Neighborhoods to find one that fits your interests and tastes. After finding one, click on the name. You will be taken to the main page for this hood. Find the button that says, "Join this neighborhood," and click on it.

This will take you to a page entailing a description of that neighborhood, and vacancies within it. Click on one of the vacancies.

A listing of sites in a certain area of a neighborhood will appear. Scroll down until you find one marked "Vacant." Click on the address (a number, like 9042).

Now you will be at a membership application. Choose the "free personal homepage" option (all others will cost money). At the bottom of the page, click the button stating "I agree to all…etc."

This will take you to the rest of the application. Fill out, at a minimum:

  1. Your name
  2. Your zip code
  3. Your email address
  4. Your gender
  5. Your date of birth
  6. Your member name

As with getting an email address, you might have to search a while to find a name that isn't already taken. Another problem that comes up is that someone applies for the same address at the same time as you, but gets theirs submitted first. In this case, go back to choosing a vacancy and try again.

After successfully completing your application, go to Hotmail (or what ever server you use) to retrieve your password.

Go to the file manager and enter your member name and password in the correct fields. Press submit. You are now ready to create your first webpage.

On to the basic webpage.
