2006-2007
Social Studies Department
Geneva High School, Geneva NY

In this class we will study primate social groups and communication as well as new world archeology.
The first half of the course is devoted to an in-depth study of chimpanzee, bonobo and gorilla social
behavior. We will read In the Shadow of Man by Jane Goodall.  We will travel to a zoo to
observe the gorilla family and/or orangutans that lives there.  We will study the latest findings in language research with
primates. Do chimps, gorillas and bonobos communicate ? If so, what is the implication of that ? We will
look at the latest ideas about human evolution .
The second half of the course is devoted to the study of archeology. We will learn how archeologists
excavate and how they interpret data. We will set up an imaginary dig and interpret it. We also look in
some detail at the Mayan civilization of Central America. I will share with you some slides and information
based on three trips to the Yucatan peninsula and Guatemala. We will investigate the Cahokia site.
It is important to attend class regularly and keep pace with the readings. I expect each student to pursue
one independent project of special interest.
Below are some links to topics we will be studying.
