History outline:

The earliest recorded Societies of St. George were formed in America before the War of Independence. In New York (1770), Philadelphia (1772), & Charleston (1773). The aims were to give assistance to British Immigrants who “stayed on”.

Many more Societies continued to form in cities all over America and Canada. Melbourne founded its own Society of St. George in 1848. In England the first Royal Society of St. George was established in London in 1894, gaining distinction with Queen Victoria as the first Royal Patron. Since then the reigning Monarch has been the Society’s Patron. In 1902 King Edward VII granted the use of the prefix “Royal”, and in 1963 a Royal Charter of Incorporation was signed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In 1904 Melbourne became a Branch of the Royal Society of St. George, which has become the Premier Patriotic Society of England with some 80 branches around the world.

The Aims of the Society are:

    - To bear true allegiance to Her Majesty The Queen her heirs and successors;

    - To foster the love of England and the Commonwealth by spreading the knowledge of English history, traditions and ideals;

    - To keep fresh the memory of those in all walks of life who have served England or the Commonwealth in the past, in order to inspire leadership in the future;

    - To combat all activities likely to undermine the strength of England and the Commonwealth.

    - To further English interests everywhere, to ensure that St. George’s Day is properly celebrated and to provide focal points throughout the world where English men and women may gather together.

    - To continue the traditional St. George benevolence by donating to worthy charities.
