i remember the first time i heard DHR. i was at a club, waiting to see Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and one of the sound guys, bless his heart, threw on some ATR. my jaw dropped open, and i may have drooled, i'm not sure. i stumbled over to the mixing board, and managed to inquire as to who it was. "Atari Teenage Riot" was the response i got, and i spent all of my free time in the next week looking for ATR. i found a 'not your business' ep, on vinyl, and bought it 'cuz i had to have it. then i spent another week tracking down a turntable. but damn it, this shit rocks.
DHR ON TOUR!!! ATR, EC8OR & SHIZUO!!!
i went to the show last night (dec. 4th, in st. louis) and i must say, it kicked ass. ec8or opened, and they were as viscous as one might expect them to be, but seemed a little uncomfortable on stage... might be 'cuz they're rookies, but it was probably because most of the people there were just kinda hangin out... after a while a few people started hopping about and dancing and they looked a little more at ease. next up, shizuo. ok, this was nuts. not only was the guy behind the decks a fucking lunatic, but there was a voluptuous succubus cavorting on stage, doing some pretty wicked things. also, he'd be pounding away with a mad beat and all of a sudden it would just stop and be replaced by elevator music. the first time he did this, i laughed out loud. it was insane. after a lengthy break, ATR came out. the place was poised, these were the cats they had come out in some pretty gank-ass weather to see. as soon as it started, i and damn near everyone else in the joint went off. there's just nothing that beats screaming along with alec empire and hanin elias (and damn she's a cutie) until you can't speak. i'm not even going to try to describe the show any further, because i'm still trembling. bottom line: if the tour is coming near you, go fucking see it.
i've heard from some kids on the ATR mailing list that the video for 'atari teenage riot' is absolutely fookin' gash. has ATR sold out? has Alec ignored his own advice? i haven't seen the video yet, but i'm a little scared. if they fucked up, i think i'm just going back to punk. and i'll only listen to punk bands that have already broken up so that MTV can't parade my music around like a five-dollar crack whore.
1984 was a joke, you'll see where we are 10 years later...

digital hardcore: breakbeat/jungle beats with big guitars and lyrics designed to make you think and act. check it out. techno is dead. |
alec empire - generation star wars [***]one of atari teenage riot's programmer's solo projects. alec empire is the man behind dhr. shit, he's just the man in general. anyway, the sound is mellower than atr, but still loud in parts. parts of it almost sound like beck had a thumb in it.alec empire - Les Etoiles Des Filles Mortes [**]another project of the wizard of buzz. this one is a *lot* slower than his other stuff. very, um, tranquil. excellent for falling asleep to, or calming down. i think i'll end all my mix tapes with a song off this disc. if you like moby, then check out alec empire. |
kickass DHR. now, i'll be the first to admit that ATR was the first band to do it... but these cats do it better. better beats, better guitars, better everything. like ATR with swank. |
shizuo vs. shizor [***]oddest of the dhr lot if you ask me... after listening to this disc, i feel... absolved. i think i'm almost ready. one of these days, i'm going to go home and pitch all my techno cds. definately check this one out. |
nu york-nu skool : east coast drum 'n' bass [****]this disc is supafly. released by sm:)e, so you know i'm not lyin to ya. please, if you listen to quote-un-quote 'electronica', go get this disc so you can see what it's really all about. if i have to hear prodigy one more time, i swear, i am just going to snap. |
keoki - ego-trip [***]you know what? if you don't know who keoki is, just get out. |
talvin singh - anokha: soundz of the asian underground[***]wow, this disc is cool... and i would have bought it even if i didn't dig the music. Talvin, (a dj from india) was tired of his culture being plundered by musicians (look around, see if you can make it through a day without hearing a sitar or a tabula), and put together this compilation of authentic asian creations. it's really calm, but invigorating at the same time. like a spring rain. plus, my girlfriend's mom can translate the lyrics. wicked. |
zingaia - beneath the veil [***]pretty cool stuff. it's like... enigma, but not annoying like enigma is. lots more energy in the music. ethnic beats... a sound similiar to much of the music on Anokha (see previous review) |
Björk
i love her voice. i love her voice. i love her voice. that about covers it.
Beck
i'm not talking about the loser/where it's at slick-boy beck, i'm talking one foot in the grave beck. what some think is gibberish babble is the attempt to share his feelings... and sometimes i connect.
