Journalism

The world of journalism has had its ups and downs within the scope of the “public eye”: despite communication with the public on a constant basis, few people realize the job that is the pressman.

Although recent world events have given a new dignity and aura of intrigue to the field, the advancing forces of tabloid publications and sensationalism, having permeated even the most respected of networks, newspapers, and magazines, have also lent it a taint of sleaziness.

Nonetheless, the media is the mirror by which the world sees itself, and probably the public’s greatest tool for balancing interests, and ultimately effecting social reform. In this crucial role, it can neither be ignored nor trivialized.

It can, however, be improved. This section of the Conformer is intended (in its own small way) to contribute to this improvement. In this capacity, articles, essays, exposes, news, photographs, and any other sort of media that can feasibly be published via hypertext protocol, will be.

Canadian Publications

National

  • Maclean’s : pride and joy of Canada’s liberally-right/ mainstream/ in-the-know crowd. Nonetheless a quality publication and worth the read. Good exposes, oft-stimulating editorials, thorough researchers, and (best of all) good grammar.
  • The Globe and Mail : one of our mainstream national newspapers.
  • The National Post : another of our mainstream national newspapers.
  • CBC : aka the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, which, despite funding cuts, strikes, this, and that, still rivals the BBC in my mind in terms of tasteful, non-biased, informative and often daring news coverage. Not to mention hosting This Hour Has 22 Minutes, arguably the best political satire and plain ole funny comedy show anywhere, ever. And being the authority on the NHL. Go there. Now.
  • CTV : another fine Canadian network, with lots of tradition. Doesn’t get the same length of a spiel as the CBC because no 22 Minutes. Although it does carry Ally McBeal, which is great.

Newfoundland

  • The Muse : official student newspaper of Memorial University of Newfoundland.
  • The Telegram : perhaps St. John’s favourite newspaper. If  St. John’s current affairs and weather doesn’t much interest you, I recommend the odd glance at the opinions section. You may be amazed, or at least amused.

British Publications

National

  • The Guardian : takes the notion of free press rather seriously. One of the flag-bearers of British and world issues, making a full-time job out of the very real necessity of making voices heard, on the many questions relevant (depending on whom you ask) to our continued success as a species (if indeed, such things as species exist).
  • BBC : No list of journalistic sources would be complete without the inclusion of the BBC, possibly the least smudged window to the world available to westerners. Although clarity, despite what Clarica might have to say about it, is relative. Being a government agency, there’s no escaping the aura of “political agenda” that hovers about an otherwise perfectly respectable organization.
