Steve Benson's life is turned around by the death of his brother. He travels to the town of Hyde River to investigate the mystery surrounding the death. Once there, he realizes he may have gotten into more than he bargained for. He meets Sheriff's Deputy Tracy Ellis, she has lived there her whole life and knows that the townspeople are very secretive about their past. As Steve digs deeper into the history of Hyde River, he begins to learn about their horrible secret. He finally comes face to face with the evil of Hyde River and realizes that the only thing that will stop this beast is God.

This book was really different. I was actually amazed at how Peretti put sin into a physical thing. Sin eats a hole in people's hearts, which is exactly happened to the people of this town. Then as the 'disease' progressed, the 'dragon' came and got his property. This book was fascinating and made me think a little more about the real effects of evil on God's creatures. Peretti said the main point of this book is that sin will kill you and I agree 100% with him.
