CAMPHOR ~ (Cinnamomum Camphora) (Odour intensity 5)

The oil is extracted from the leaves and the wood of the tree which grows mainly in China. Its toxicity rating is D which although low, this oil is a heart stimulant and should never be used on people prone to Epilepsy.

The odour of Camphor is fresh, pungent and balsamic and is a useful ingredient in inhalations, for coughs, colds, influenza and bronchitis. It is also useful for shock, heart failure, hysteria and helps to lift depression.

Those of you around my age group will remember the good old Camphorated oil that always came out of the medical cabinet when any sign of a cough or cold reared its ugly head in the family. I must admit that I really liked the inhalations that my mother used to prepare; just a couple of drops of the oil into a bowl of very hot water, with a towel draped over my head and the bowl, and breathe deeply - mmmm lovely!! I suffered a great deal with bronchitis as a child and as anti-biotics were not around then, my Mother would put me to bed, always keeping me in an even, warm temperature, give me honey and lemon to sip and the above mentioned inhalation, and just one night of sweating and I was well on the way to recovery the next day. I would like to add that I never, repeat, never have bronchitis now and I've not done so for many years.

If you would like to use Camphor as a massage, take 20mls of your base oil and add 5 drops of Camphor.

Happy Massage!
